I see lots of Suntory around town. Does this mean by definition it's a good beer? I mean they make so much they couldn't possibly be stuffing it up, right? |
Kiwi, you just can't help yourself can you? Making a shite load of VB is just one criteria that they can't stuff it up. The other more critical one is they know about beer quality!
Don't know what goes on in a suntory, but when they deliver them on the bag of tricycles in crates exposed to this 40C+ sun, I know then Suntory knows nothing about good quality! Beer should never see the light of day nor the fluorescent light of a bar fridge for that matter.
Apart from that, suntory ain't bad - it's just that it's bland compared to VB. |
Yeah, and McDonalds knows all about great burgers. A bit bland, but they know what they are doing, they know how not to up, and I'd eat them any day.
I don't mean to criticize your VB. Hell I even searched Auckland for Boags the other day to give the stuff a try based simply on what you and Matt are doing. Yeah, Boag's is nice enough. It's nothing special compared to other products out there, but it's tasty enough, not bad quality, and has an very cool label design.
Drinking blander mass produced beer with good turnover of stock can be better than drinking a great beer that's turned to crap after being left on the shelf for too long. Pilsner Urquell is great when fresh but turns awful after a certain point, and I'd sooner drink fresh Boags than a dusty old Pilsner Urquell - even though under ideal circumstances I'd prefer the former.
Now having got that out of the way, could you please not treat me like some kind of a moron? You and I simply have different priorities when it comes to beer. I'm not selling the stuff for a start.
Maybe I'll just stay out of this thread and you guys can use this space for promotional purposes. |

Dont do that, its good to have different opinions.
As for the promotional comment - I dont know why the other beer importers arent on here spruiking up their beers as well. Chirst, I would be. Perhaps they are all too busy drinking to care what we think! |

Hey bluecheese and kiwi,
I am in NYC and I brew beer here. I will be in shanghai for a long time come august. I can bring my beer books etc. for the cause.
Last time i was in china I was upset about the beer. Snow, tsingdao, etc.. are all sweeter beers for the Asian markets (dont get me wrong, i still like and drink them). Its just hard to get your hands on cheap western beer. I think making it is the only answer.
Plus if we brew beer in shanghai we can add some different chinese flavours. mix it up for cheap.
Just as blue moon uses coriander and orange peel, we can up that with some lychee and ..... i don't know. Ideas? |
sure bring the books and whatever else you got.
i dont have any equipment, i wouldnt know where to begin to find the equipment (although im sure its out there in shanghai) and ive never actually brewed. well, i witnessed a few stages of the process from a couch in lahaina years back.
always up for a new project in shanghai. i have a few buddies here who have brewed in the past and im sure they would be interested too.
ps- although im open to the idea, im not too big on flavored brews. how about we start with a nice nut brown ale? |

Haha, all the beers are still available at the bars. For home delivery we really only have light left. The ship is on its way, and we'll be fully stocked in about 10 days with new products as well. |

Gary, the brewmaster at Henrys is no longer there as of yesterday, and the word is the place will close down next week. A shame really, because it was the forerunner to Oktober and Bund Brewhouse. They missed BIGTIME with the furnishings, food and complete fitout basically. The Tanks were in the wrong spot, and the $18.65 they spent on furnishings was just not enough. A real shame this is. |

So I don't suppose Gary will be moving somewhere else?
A real shame. Gary's pale ale was very much the real deal. |

He has some other things on the cards but it will be a few months away. Hopefully someone gives him a venue worthy of being called a brewery. |

Wunderbar (www.wunderbar.cn) has Chimay Blue (750ml - the only way to drink it) for rmb110 and an excellent Westmalle Dubbel or Duvel for rmb60. Free pool on Brunswick 9' tables and 12 screens with 2 satellites.
If you take home Chimay, make sure to set it upright and let it rest for a week before consuming, leaving the last 10mm or so of sediment in the bottle. I gotta say it's torture to leave that bottle untouched when raiding the fridge! |

I personally thought his pilsner was a little timid, but It's good for shanghai to have more breweries, Henry's was a little tatty with the furnishings and atmosphere, and good god the bloody techno music up loud!!
It would be great for him to pop up somewhere else, BULLDOG maybe? |

he is working on another venue i think with some other investors. Again, hopefully something more befitting than a glorified KTV venue.
Re the Little Creatures, you can sometimes pick it up from City Super. The problem with us importing it is that it is from Perth in WA, and we don't have any other beers from there. To ship it to Sydney then here is expensive. We may bring it in later, but will be only 20 or so cases at a time. |

I was not a fan of any of Henry's beers, much preferring the limited offerings from Castle October. Anyway, it's a shame to see a micro-brewery/ pub combo like Henry's sink so quickly; the Bund venue rental was probably a big financial strain too. Hope Gary has better luck with his next venture. |

Damn, and I was thinking the micro-brewery thing was really starting to kick off. Still as long as Oktober sticks around... |

Oktober is in big trouble unfortunately. All of the senior mgt have left, their brewer stuffed up the Weissbier and it is still a couple of weeks away from being fixed and their Pilsner is a fair bit weaker than it used to be.
It was always a tough task at that place but i really hope they make it. It needs a decent manager with the balls to tell the owner that he won't get his money back in 3 months, it will take a couple of years to build the place up. |

Agreed. . . I thought the pilsner was bad and the weird rasberry beer was downright awful, but the honey brown and dark were decent and the pale ale was first class.
I kind of gave up on the pilsner and rasberry beer at the start, so I don't know if they got better later. |

While not available in the shops and interesting article on pre-historic brewing.
Bronze Age brew proves a vintage ale
By Tom Peterkin in Headford, Co Galway
Last Updated: 12:01am BST 13/08/2007
Bronze Age man was a bit of a boozer, according to a team of archaeologists who claim to have uncovered evidence of the world's largest prehistoric brewing industry.
Archaeologists Declan Moore and Billy Quinn: Bronze Age brew proves a vintage ale
After four years of research, which has seen them travel from Belgium to Bavaria to investigate ancient beer-making methods, the team has concluded that Ireland's love affair with alcohol predates the 1759 foundation of the Guinness brewery by many thousands of years.
An archaeological consultancy based in Co Galway has demonstrated that enigmatic man-made Bronze Age features, which are common throughout Ireland, could well have been ancient microbreweries.
The research by the Moore Group has culminated with the archaeologists recreating Bronze Age brewing methods and producing a modern version of the ale, which our forefathers would have drunk by the beaker after a hard day's hunting and gathering.
The research, which is to be published in Archaeology Ireland magazine next month, focuses on the 4,500 "fulacht fiadhs" (pits or recesses), which date from 1,500 BC and are dotted across the island.

The purpose of the horseshoe-shaped mounds surrounding an indentation has been a mystery since they were first identified in the 17th century.
In the 1950s it was proposed that they were filled with water, which was brought to the boil by adding heated stones and used to cook mutton. But a lack of animal bones around the sites led to Declan Moore and his colleague, Billy Quinn, suggesting an alternative use.
The Moore Group's deductions suggest large-scale beer drinking was carried out in Ireland long before the 6th century AD when brewing is first documented.
Early writings show that the brewer was a highly important member of the monastic communities in the early Christian era.
Studies of residues found at prehistoric sites in the Far East have dated beer back to 5,000 BC. But the Moore Group claims the proliferation of fulacht fiadhs in Ireland suggests ancient brewing on an unprecedented scale.
"It means that there were up to 4,500 breweries in Ireland in the Bronze Age, which means it was the most widespread brewing industry in prehistory in the world," Mr Moore said.
Mr Quinn added: "We were not simply on a quest for beer. We were only interested in fulacht fiadhs and we were trying to find out what they were used for. It just so happens that they make an acceptable quality of beer."
At the weekend The Daily Telegraph was able to sample the fruits of this process.
The verdict? The cloudy, yellowish brew with no discernible head was dangerously drinkable with a yeasty taste reminiscent of weiss beer.
The brewers were unsure of its strength, but there was enough bite to suggest that a Bronze Age binge would be quite an event. |
