Yep Little Creatures is fantastic. I guzzled a load of it last month. Hope to see it in Shanghai eventually!

We will probably be bringing it in after the summer. they rebuilding their brewery so no excess capacity at the moment.

Redback here in a few weeks. Boags is back.

I see City have kronenberg. Not a bad beer, bit expensive though.

Post subject: Eight healthy reasons to drink beer

Eight healthy reasons to drink beer

By Allison Van Dusen, Forbes.com

A 2006 report showed that a drink or two a day might be linked to better cognitive function in women. (Clipart)

Looking for a good excuse to tip back a beer?

You don't have to wait for St. Patrick's Day. That's because a decade's worth of health research shows that regular, moderate beer intake--one to two 12 ounce glasses per day for men and one for women--can be good for you, especially if you're facing some of the most common diseases related to aging.

Experts say wine tends to get most of the attention when it comes to the health benefits of alcohol primarily because of the French paradox, a reference to the relatively low rate of heart disease in France in spite of a diet high in saturated fat. The idea is that daily sips of Merlot make the difference.

In Depth: Eight Healthy Reasons To Drink Beer
But a number of studies are showing that moderate consumption of alcohol, including beer, can have similar heart healthy effects, including making men 30 to 35% less likely to have a heart attack than those who abstain.

"Wine is still on moral high ground," says Charlie Bamforth, chair and professor of the department of food science and technology at the University of California, Davis, "but beer deserves just the same acclamation."

Interest in the health effects of beer has been growing over the past eight to 10 years in tandem with a rise in the popularity of craft beers--usually defined as products of brewers who make fewer than 2 million barrels a year, says Nancy Tringali Piho, a spokeswoman for the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

Unlike many mass-produced beers, craft beers tend to be brewed with a particular focus on flavor, appearance and aroma. Their appeal has attracted an upscale audience that's curious about the beverage and how it compares with wine health-wise.

The news is good, particularly for baby boomers, many of whom are dealing with obesity and high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Alcohol, including beer, in moderation raises high-density lipoprotein or HDL, known as good cholesterol, says Dr. R. Curtis Ellison, chief of the section of preventive medicine and epidemiology and professor of medicine and public health at the Boston University School of Medicine. It also appears to have a favorable effect on the lining of blood vessels, making them less likely to form a clot or for a clot to rupture and plug an artery, and may help protect against Type 2 diabetes.

"People should realize that a little bit of alcohol on a regular basis decreases the risks of aging," says Ellison, who specializes in researching, among other things, the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and chronic diseases.

And earlier this month researchers at the National Institutes of Health released a study showing that frequent drinking in moderation may protect men from death due to cardiovascular disease. Men who reported drinking 120 to 365 days a year had a 20% lower cardiovascular death rate than those who drank one to 36 days a year. Overdoing it, however, can have the opposite effect. Men who knocked back five or more drinks when they did indulge had a 30% greater risk for death via heart disease.

Beer may also give your brain a boost.

Adults over age 65 who drank one to six alcoholic beverages over the course of the week turned out to have a lower risk of dementia than non-drinkers or heavier drinkers, according to a 2003 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Likewise, a 2006 report that appeared in an American Heart Association journal showed that a drink or two a day might be linked to better cognitive function in women.

Consume With Caution

Of course, beer isn't good for everyone. Other studies have shown that consuming two or more glasses of alcohol a day may increase a woman's risk of breast cancer, and few medical experts will suggest that a non-drinker take up the habit just for the health benefits, when exercise and a good diet can produce similar benefits.

And Bamforth says he's not so sure that the growing selection of organic beers, those that don't contain sulfites, chemical preservatives and are made with mostly, if not all, organic ingredients, or beers flavored with antioxidant-laden super-fruits will have much of a health impact. It's the alcohol content, as well as vitamins and minerals, in beer that has proved to make a difference.

More important, he doesn't recommend that people think of beer as medicine. Beer is something to enjoy, he says. Just don't feel guilty about indulging.

"In moderation," Bamforth says, "it's part of a wholesome diet."

Great news. Our new brews have arrived. Check out www.justbeer.cn

Redback Wheat Beer. A great Aussie Wheat beer. i think this will give Hoegaarden a run for its money.

Beez Neez - a honey beer.

Bohemian Pilsner

Alpha Pale Ale - This, in my opinion, is the best beer in China. Hands down. An absolutely thing of beauty. Styled on those North American micro brews. It's very hoppy. MUST try this.

Pure Blonde - Low Carb full strength beer. GREAT for the beer gardens.

Cascade Stout - an excellent stout beer. Nice and chocolatey.

All of these and our regular products of course will be available at our 1 year Anniversary party at Sashas on Sunday 8th June.

I also note that KJ is having a beer and BBQ event on the 31st of May at Bubbas. Those fellas at Craft beer are increasing their already sizeable range. Should be good.

A true beer lover...

Quote:
Seatbelt for beer slab, not 5-year-old
11:57 AEST Tue May 13 2008

A driver who buckled up his slab of beer - but not the five-year-old boy sitting next to it - has shocked police who pulled him over near Alice Springs.

Constable Wayne Burnett said he was "shocked and appalled" when he pulled over the Holden Commodore on the Ross Highway south of the desert town on the weekend.

"I haven't ever seen something like this before," he said.

"Sure we get beer out of vehicles that is being taken into restricted areas but this is the first time that the beer has taken priority over a child."

He said the driver of the car "just looked at me blankly" when he was handed a $750 fine for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and failing to ensure a child is wearing a seatbelt.

"He didn't get it," Const Burnett said.

"I asked him about the fact the child was unrestrained and the beer was, and he said he didn't know anything about it."

Const Burnett said there were five people in the car, including the child, along with the 30 pack of beer.

"There were four adults in the car, two in the front seat and two in the back seats and in between those adults there was the carton of beer strapped in with the belt," he said.

"The child was sitting in the lump in the centre, unrestrained."

Superintendent Sean Parnell of Alice Springs police said he was appalled by the incident.

"This serves as a timely reminder to all drivers to ensure they wear seatbelts and ensure as is their responsibility that all passengers in their vehicle are secured in the appropriate manner," he said in a statement.

http://www.decanter.com/news/257002.html

A range of glasses tailored specifically for beer has been launched by Austrian stemware specialist Spiegelau.

The Riedel-owned company claims the glasses help drinkers get the most out of beer's characteristics ?appearance, aroma, taste and finish.

They are made from extra-thin glass and shaped to match the world's most common beer types.

The range includes a tulip-shaped Stemmed Pilsner glass, which the company claims allows for a fuller release of flavours, a 0.5l Lager glass with a mouth wider at the top to accentuate aromas of pale lagers and ales, and a tall Wheat Beer glass (right).

Rupert Ponsonby, director of the Beer Academy, an organisation dedicated to education and training in the understanding of beer, believes the glasses will help bring about a new appreciation towards beer tasting.

'It's about time,' he said. 'There is a massive lack of knowledge about beer in this country, and huge anti-beer snobbery. Glass size and shape is as important for beer as it is wine. The subtleties in different flavours of beer are as great, if not greater than wine. In hops, you can find everything from lime and lychee to blackcurrant.

'People are missing out madly if they don't look into different styles of beer. The beauty of these glasses is that you wrap your lips around them and they are so thin; it makes the tasting experience more sensuous. Brewers are artists, and these glasses allow the different flavours in beer to be appreciated the way they should.'

Spiegelau designed the range after investigating the effect of glass size and shape on the flavour profile of beer.

The glasses retail at £6.

**Nice**. I have actually been to a Riedel wine glass tasting, and it DOES make a difference. I'm getting myself some of these.

just got back from the old castle oktober, which is now hoffbrauhaus. not much in the way of change, except the uniforms, and a philippino band upstairs. 3 of us, had the wheat beer. absolutely shizenhausen. this should not have been served to customers. it's pretty obvious that they toasted the wheat, but actually burnt it. it tastes like burnt cornflakes. cloudier than the worst polluted day in shanghai as well. yes, wheat beer should be cloudy, but not like this.

cannot believe they actually allowed that crap to be served to customers. a bit of a shame, because a good venue, but their management and head brewer need a kick in the twot.

Any idea where to find the Tsingtao Dark in Shanghai? I had it once and it was pretty decent.

The E-Mart near me has it also (Rainbow in Honkou). Not too bad if you like that sort.

Just had my mixed case delivered. Last night samples two with my girl

Beez Neez - Hmm at best so/so, not really what I was expecting. I guess i was hoping for more of a honey brown ale then a honey wheat. Being familiar with Mead I could easily pick up on the notes of honey but not much on the pallet.

Alpha Pale Ale - A good solid APA (American Pale Ale), easy drinking and smooth. Good nose, full of hops. Its a close fight with the Rogue to be best pale ale in China, but only because of price

I love Guiness Dark , but bottle is too small(330) and price is too high (10 yuans). So , usually , i buy Yanjiing Beer (630) for 2 yuans/bottle. If cooled well - very well for money.

yeah, i'm not that big a fan of the Beez Neez myself. It's a love it or hate it product.

The Alpha though is a first rate product. Best beer in Australia last year at the beer awards. Great hoppy beer, and you would think it was an American Pale for sure. It does use American Cascade Hops. Price wise, is it about the same as the Rogue? I actually like the Brooklyn IPA quite a lot too.

Another hot night so time for some pilsner.
...I prefer ales to lagers anyway, and those times I do drink pilsner I try to go for Czech pilsner rather than German pilsner. Pilsner Urquell is probably my favourite. But Czech pilsner isn't available in Shanghai, and even if it was available here it might not taste good here since Czech pilsner seems to spoil easier than just about any other type of beer I know.

The Original Budvar lager from the Czech Republic has arrived in our fair city! This is one of the better beers in lagerdom, and the only Czech product available in Shanghai that I know of. Very pleasant and refreshing hoppiness to it...easy to drink from personal experience.
The 3 that I had last night traveled well (they were produced in June).

We've got it for rmb35 per 330ml bottle at Wunderbar Sports Bar (www.wunderbar.cn), and have a Buy 3, get 1 free until October (to celebrate the Olympics and especially the end of the Olympics), making it only rmb26 per bottle for 1 of the world's premier lagers. We've got your Bitburger as well. Of course that includes free pool on 1 of our 6 genuine 9' Brunswick Metro tables and free popcorn. We've got complete Olympics coverage with 4 flat screen tv's next to each other carrying different events for easy viewing.

hey beer fans -- I've been wanting to do this for a while, so this Friday ...

BEER SNOB!

We are sick of warm beer made with formaldehyde that tastes like glue.

So are you.

On Friday, October 10, 2008 @ Bulldog Shanghai, you will get a chance to taste the good stuff.

Bull Dog Pub - 1 Wulumuqi Nan Lu (between Hengshan and Huaihai Lu)

We're starting at 6pm (so come after work) and going late.

NO COVER CHARGE - FREE ENTRY - Starts at 6pm !!

We are passionate about good beer, and after you taste the brews we've lined up -- at prices half the normal -- you will share our passion.

25 RMB for bottles of the best beer in Shanghai. Or, 150 RMB gets you 10 bottles. Yes, that's insane, but you'd be even more insane to pass it up.

Some of these are new imports that you haven't seen here yet. We've sourced the best beers from USA, Australia, Germany, Belgium, England, etc.

Taste the best from distributors like American Craft Beers, Just Beer, etc.

Beer goes well with ... music. Especially drinking songs. So bring your own favorite drinking songs -- on a CD or your iPod. Our DJ will be taking requests between sips of Rouge Dead Man's Ale and Brooklyn Lager. What's your favorite drinking song? Bring it!
