| Post subject: Yangtze River Cruise |
We are thinking of booking a Yangtze cruise for the October break - only have a long weekend with school holidays (Friday - Tuesday) so can't go too far. Trying to decide which line to take and in which direction. Looking at Victoria, President and Regal - is Victoria worth the extra money? Travel agent says downstream is better but my parents said upstream is better (that's what they did and that's what their agent told them?). Anyone done this? |

I went a few years ago on Regal. Flew to Wuhan and then travelled upstream to Chongqing. Going up the river takes a few days more than going down. Some friends were just on Victoria and they raved about it. If memory serves, it took five days to travel upstream and it takes three days to travel downstream. Tack on a collective day for travelling to/from Shanghai. |

I went downstream last month on a Victoria 4 star vessel. We saw a 5 star right next door, going through the locks and each bedroom had 2 little metal chairs on a tiny balcony which would have been good for us as it rained a lot of the 2-1/2 day trip so no chance to sit on the deck. Most everyone got off at Yichang. We had an excursion each day, one up around 700 steps to a temple, after a short bus ride through a mostly ghost town, one on another boat and then a really small one pulled by these guys (apparently they used to be naked some years back! On the last day we saw the dam. Take a lot of reading matter. I reckon it's better to go in a group as there are 'quiet' moments so you could play cards or something. It wasn't something I had planned on doing, but my houseguest wanted to go; it was restful and a good time to bond with family/friends. I don't think I would want to be on there longer than 2-1/2 days. |

The river cruise is also something I have in mind.
For those of you who’ve done it, within the past 2 years, what would be your suggestions?
Chong qing to Wu han or would you go further, say to Nan jing or even Shang hai?
Are the organized, on land, trips worthwhile and which one’s do you recommend?
How did you book the trip; online, local travel agent? |
