| Post subject: Mummy Returns @ Zhongshan Park |
Hi folks
Last Friday 2pm, I brought my 5 year old son and 7 year old nephew from Putong to Zhong Shan Park. I had to pay 80rmb for each kid and myself. I was assured by the ticketing lady that younger kids have been to the park. No worries.
It is not often you get to see Theme Parks in China, so off I go. We were excited despite the burning temperature.
Walked thru the park and alas arrived at the 'blocked' area. Surrounded by the familiar egyptian walls and monuments. In we went. We saw 2 huge black tents. One is totally empty with a TV showing the making of Mummy Returns. The second was packed with pple queuing. At least 15-20m long. I enquired abt this tent. Apparently it is some maze in the dark and entertained by scary masquerades.
2 kids in tow. I wanted to go see other attractions first. To my surprise, what remains were ALL funfair 'type' counters, lined with some food stalls. Throwing of balls, fishing, pulling some strings to get freebies. The tickets gives you 4 tokens.
But....did we come here for a theme park or funfair ? Do I need to pay 80rmb for a funfair or just 1 attraction ? Furthermore, my son could barely reach the game stall counters (not to mention throwing a ball, 2metres away). Both my kids were utterly disappointed.
I felt totally 'fleeced'. I tried to talk to the authorities, but they instead challenged me to lodge my complaints. They claimed that there is a show at night, and I should have come at night ?!
I am certain I am not the only who felt this way. There was a local Chinese family and 2 dating couples who also shared their disappointment with me.
Living in a foreign country, I do not know where I can voice such scams. I can at best inform as many people of my experience so that they can make a better choice !!

Perhaps write to Shanghai Daily. Nowadays this newspaper is half business news (as it used to be) and the other half about lunatic criminals and mad rioters, so your complaint would be rather refreshing. Seriously I suggest you do it. Media and personal relationships (which I assume you dont have) are the only ways to reach the Chinese authorities nowadays. |

With all due respect True Blue, you were paying for the one attraction - the "maze in the dark and entertained by scary masquerades". Anything else built around it is just to support it. It's not Disney Land or Universal Studios.
I haven't been, but was considering it for an upcoming weekend. I was put off going before b/c of the RMB 80 ticket price.
Did you go into that tent? If so, was it entertaining at least? |

I'm curious about the "maze" as well, what was it like? Was it a haunted house kind of thing? |

From what I understand from the write-up in That's Shanghai , it's kind of like the live attractions/shows at Disney and Universal, with both a haunted house thing and also some theatrics and maybe even pyrotechnics(?). But like I said, I've never been.
And also, it's complete BS that 5 and 7 year old kids are paying full price. |

I had wanted to go too... although I was more concerned about it being overly crowded... have heard it is a decent show... but this going at night doesn't sound very fair. But, if I remember the ticket pricing, there were two tiers based on times and days... but that still doesn't explain why they didn't inform you of it. |

Got to agree with Stinky here. Ive seen the ads and it was plainly obvious to me that this Mummy Returns Theme Park is an absolute joke. Especially since they are now advertising "new exciting games!"
I just can't believe you were expecting a full fledged theme park with rides, etc. Im actually surprised they had 2 tents. |

Was it one of Greg Burnard's theme park scam? I remember seeing the ads recruiting forigners to play the roles of the hero, the bad bald guy etc. Wondering if any one of you here got the job? |

I didn't get the impression that it was a theme park at all... maybe because i read an article about it in one of the english magazines before i saw the ads... thought of it as more of that Titanic show that travels around... or a haunted house set up for halloween.
Still thought it looked like it would be interesting... |
