Post subject: cell phones

I want to buy a used cell phone here and have only found one shop so far but I know there are many. Does anyone know of a shop and the general price range? Thanks!

there are various vendors scattered around the city that sell used cell phones out of a small shop. look for a desk with cell phones scattered around on the top. most of the places are pretty small, and they'll barter with you too so the asking price isn't aways that firm. I looked into getting a used one, and found a decnt looking phone for only 300rmb, but I decided to go for a new one at just over 1000rmb because i wasn't comfortable buying it from a street stall. make sure that the price you agree to includes a battery and compatible charger.

sooooo many choices... you should establish a price first that you're willing to pay. Then go to one of the big malls to get an idea of how much different types of phones cost. After you pick one that is reasonably priced with the features you want, go to a local store and see if you can find the same model and ask for 10-15% off the price you saw at the big mall.

Be sure it includes the MANUFACTURER's battery... I've had bad luck purchasing extra batteries that were clones... one cell phone almost melted in my pocket one day (at first I thought the searing pain on my leg was my imagination...), another one caused alot of malfunctions and I had to reboot my mobile all the time.

don't buy used cell phones, you get screwed and you won't even know it.
why not try ebay china, so cheap. just make sure you buy from reputable sellers only.

I was in China last week and saw the Motorola A780; price at a China Telecom store: 6980 RMB. No service agreement, phone package (accessories, incl 2 batteries, docking station, chrager, etc.).

Saw the same thing on Tiger Direct (www.tigerdirect.com) for $US 565 (including $15 shipping and 1 year extended warranty for $60), no service agreement, unlocked phone.

Colleague told me if I get a plan for approx 400 RMB/mo, I could probably get the phone for free.

So, if you travel back to the US on a regular basis you may want to check out that option.
