hey cookie-one more thing, where did you find that great \'ayi\' to cook and manage your apartment for you? Is that easy to find a roommate to share a place with? I am thinking of renting a studio or 1-bdrm somewhere nearby my office (within walking distance or >10 mins cab ride) (Citic plaza on Nanjing W road. JiangAn district)... how\'s the rent there? thanx!!!

Hate to make a sweeping generalization about HR but having worked in US for the last 20 years, I must say I\'ve heard nothing but negative comments about HR\'s competency. As a financial analyst who\'ve seen enough wastefulness, it sickened me when I saw a contract recruiter\'s billing of US$150/hr. (no agency involved) in a well-known high tech co I worked during those boom years. He interviewed me asking the same generic questions as a US$25/hr regular recruiter would. Last month I was a contractor at a chip start-up and I was surprised to see this smooth talking contract recruiter still get paid for over US$100/hr.... I mean at this labor market.. it\'s insane. My friend who\'s a director of test engineering at a large co makes only about half of those guys... considering the skills involved. I must admit I was tempted to become one during the boom .. so I can pay off my mortgage early and leave for Shanghai and be a lady of leisure there.

kathie - yeah we\'re definitely in the same boat, including that over $20k student loan we still need to pay back! :casstet:
i\'m working in the SF bay area right now. i am originially from NYC, came out here for college/grad school. what a small world, i considered an offer at IBM @ poukeepsie, too, when i graduated \'99! was thinking about going closer to home, but decided to stick around here instead. anyways, i\'m also dealing with moving out, selling all my furniture, address changes, shipping my car to NYC, and finding someone to take my lease now, cuz i\'ll be in NYC next week to see my parents and friends before leaving for shanghai in 3 weeks. pretty crazy... i\'ve never even been to china!
cookie - yeah i\'m a US citizen. so i plan on taking full advantage of that tax exemption! the company i\'ll be working for, a chip-foundry called SMIC, will be depositing half my salary in an offshore HK accout, which is tax exempt for some strange reason i dont quite understand yet. but i\'m not complaining

Robby-hey yes what a small world! so you will be in NYC to say good bye to your family and friends? well. i am going to throw a \'going away party \' in mid july.. or earlier than that.. if you happen to be in NYC area by then, you are more than welcome to join us anyway, i am lucky that my apt lease is expiring by the end of this month so i just have to extend it for one more month and the leasing office is kind enough for letting me do it without additional charge.. and one of my friends is taking ove my car...
you have never been to China? wow.. that\'s kinda tough.. do you have any friends or relatives there? do you speak mandarin? I was born in china and I do speak a little bit shanghainese too..
wish you all the best!!

kathie, thanks for the invite. i just had my go-away bbq party last week, heh heh, there\'s no turning back now, i\'m really going to shanghai! i sent you a PM with my email address, keep in touch.
i\'ve never been to china, but i did visit taipei frequently and know it pretty well. how different can another over-crowded over-polluted chinese city be? i have two friends going at the same time, so i guess i know 2 ppl in a country of 1.3 billion. i do speak fluent mandarin tho, hopefully that\'ll help me fit in.

Kathie -- I work 2 buildings away from you at the Shanghai Centre. Drop me a line again when you get in town and let\'s meet up for lunch.
It\'s tough finding a good Ayi. I would suggest a referral from people who already have an Ayi. Once you get in town, you can check out the bulletin boards they have at the City Supermarket in the Portman/Shanghai Centre. They always have a lot of referrals from expat families leaving China who want to find a good job for their Ayi. Most people just have part-time ayi\'s who come in every other day and I think it\'s about RMB 400 to RMB 600 /month for that.
Maybe some other people can help out on this board as to how much you pay your ayis? I am a BAD example. Mine works 6 days a week for me -- very spoiled. She cooks breakfast, packs my lunch and makes dinner for me every day except Sunday. She\'s like family because she worked for my parents when they were here working in Shanghai in the 90\'s. And I pay this lady RMB 2,500 a month! ha ha. Can you believe it? That\'s what happens when you\'ve got someone who\'s been working for you 12 years and each year you give them a little raise...12 years later it\'s RMB 2,500! Well she also looks after my big crazy dog and is just about the most trustworthy person I know. I think it\'s worth it. So anyways, don\'t follow my example on that one. I think you can get a full time Ayi for about RMB 600 or so.
Oh...and you should take advantage of your moving allowance to stock up on all the good stuff you\'ll miss...such as cereal! If I could, I\'d bring boxes and boxes of cereal. Frosted Flakes are like USD 10 here. so i\'ve never been able to bring myself to buy any cereal here. Way too expensive!
