Hi,
Good question!
I'm working as a Fly Fishing guide in Mongolia, and I have been living in Shanghai for the past 3,5 years. I have searched for good manufacturers of good quality Flyfishing rods, reels, lines, fly tying materials plus all the other equipment. But I haven't found anything yet. The only thing I have found is a splitcane manufacturer in south east China.
I'm buying all my equipment in Europe and US. I know there are lots of good Flyrod manufacturers in Korea, and there should also be some good reel manufacturers in Taiwan.
I know that some of the big Flyrod brands make their rods in China, but I haven't been able to find the factory (yet). |

Just a question... Since you want to buy Flyfishing equipment in China, do you know any good places to fish in China? (Lenok, Taimen, Trout, Salmon) |

The rods you can buy at Decathlon are quite ok. Pity only that they don't have much in the field of tackle, lures etc. |

Mr. Shanghai, if you find the Loomis manufacturer, let me know. I'd like to pick up a few if they're a good deal here. |

Hi Carrol, thanks for this. It looks like the finish of the Fly rod's are okay. But you never know if they are any good or not. I normally use Sage and Loop.
Have you tried them? I will defintely send them an email. |

Problem is .. Shanghai Keside is the factory and won't sell unless in bulk.
So tell us, Mr S, how often do you go to Mongolia .. ? Would you be interested in organising a fishing trip from here, for interested people .. ? |

I don't know if Loomis produce their rods here in China, but I have heard rumours that Loop does |

Hi Carrol,
In the last 2 summers I have been on 4 trips to Mongolia. I will definitely go there again next summer for 5-6 days. And I can for sure arrange the trip so more people can join. |

Normally what I do is:
We take the transibirian railway from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar. (32 hours) A very nice trip, lots of things to see and cheap beer
When we arrive UB, we buy some food at the supermarked and take Toyota Jeep's to the Wilderness. It could be everything from 3-16 hours drive. It depends where we want to go. And if we should live in tents or in Mongolian Ger's.
One of the Ger camps I can rent got a small restaurant and shower facilities and it is located only 25 meters from an excellent river. But we can also drive further up and live in tents. It can be rough to live in tents in Mongolia though, so it is an advantage if you have been doing some hiking before.
It is very good fishing. The fish we catch is Sibirian trout (Lenok) and Sibirian salmon (Taimen). The average weight is around 2-3 punds, but we can get them up to 20-30 pounds. But the big Taimen don't normally go for a dry fly.
If you want more information, send me a PM |

Thanks, Mr S. We'll be in touch.
By the way, I found a manufacturer who is prepared to sell directly from the factory, to individuals :
BTI Sports Yangzhou Guotai Co. Ltd

hi mister shanghai,
this sounds great!!
can you tell me how much you charge for a 5 or 6 day trip or maybe you have different packages?
do you know the approximate date of your next trip and how many people you plan to take? better to make reservations sooner?
also, what is the name of the water you fish on? is it near a hamlet/village? or out in the wilderness? do you paddle on the river as well or raft from place to place?
would there be a chance for us to do any horseback riding?
if you have some links to or about the area would like to read! (have you a business website with destination info, costing, and photos of past trips? actually, you probably would have shared that already... )
sounds a blast!

Perhaps in her flat and out the window to quick-dry her clothes?
Shanghai-
This sounds fun, love the outdoors. As my girlfriend and I'd planned to visit a mutual acquaintance in UB at some point, we'd like to learn more.
Cheers. |

Hi,
Since I'm doing this on my spare time, I can't do more than 2 trips a year. I also just doing this for fun, so I'm not really charging much, just to cover my cost for your expenses and my expenses.
I don't have a fixed trip. It has been different all the 4 times I have been there. It is all up to the participants, and what they want to do.
Normally a 5 days trip will cost around 9000-1400USD including transportation, food, fishing license, accomodation and guiding.
But it depends, it can be cheaper and it can be more expensive. In fact, if we stay in ordinary tents and use helicopter the trip will not be too expensive. It is the Jeep, driver and Ger camp that are costly.
But when you are in the camp you are more flexible if you have a Jeep. And it is of course much more comfortable to live in a Ger camp than normal tents since it can be very cold at night.
I have not done any paddling or rafting. Could be fun, but more work to organize. I have also not done any horseback riding. Actually I only do "hardcore" flyfishing trips with lots of fishing, fly tying and whiskey drinking
The next trip will probably be in August 2006. And I will not bring more than 6 people. (2 Jeep's or 1 Helicopter)
What I'm thinking of doing next is flying a helicopter to a river near the Siberian border. Live in tents and live hard core. This lifestyle might not fit everyone, but I like it rough In this area there are some bears, wolfes and if we are lucky we can see snow leopards...
I got hundreds of pictures, here are 3... |
