Hiya Cat. I have a young nephew in New Zealand, who's an IT specialist. He'd love to come and work in Shanghai for a time. Any idea on firms I could approach to try and find him a job .. ? |

For a minute I thought YOU were looking for an IT job... I am not the the Expat Cat, but the market is getting flooded by young foreigners trying to enjoy the Chinese Eldorado (many of them being French lured into China by the gloomy employment market there and by uninformed French media that keep portraying China as the land of all and every opportunities). Especially for IT, we have plenty of good local resources. There are exceptions and niches, example good IT project managers or very specific development skills or some very experienced SAP implementers, but these are unlikely to reach for young and less experienced people. Even if your nephew is ready to accept local salaries, it will be hard. From the French Rat. |

Thanks for that, french. He's not exactly a 'young' foreigner, at 31. And highly qualified. I'll get his exact qualifications .. |

I also wondered what "young nephew" meant for a grandma like you. My advice is to find a niche, where his specific skills may be of interest in the market vs. what is commonly available among locals. By the way, at 31, from New Zealand, his salary expectation may be very high. I think IT services firm typically charge over 1000usd/day over there. Hard to do in China. In a formal life I was running an IT consulting operation here, for specific technical needs we used Indians (double price of local) and had one Westerner after a few years to help us with overall management (when we had over 50 projects ongoing), his price was about triple a local guy. But in both cases we could not find local talent. |

Well .. when you get to 90, you'll also think 31 is young ..
Thanks for the feedback .. I'll pass your comments on to him. |

Does he speak Chinese? I'm looking for a more senior technical services (IT) manager... 7+ years in IT, with empahasis on hardware, networking, security, and client support. But has to speak Chinese since I'm looking to keep the rest of the support staff local. And obviously I need him to speak fluent English since this position reports to me. |
