Post subject: Top 5 Shanghai Tourist Attractions

A friend and his girlfriend are passing through Shanghai and will be there for 2 1/2 days in early September and have asked me what the top 5 things to do are.

Considering I have only been there as a tourist and will have only been there for 4 days myself when they land, I thought the question better be asked to the Shanghai Expat gang

so apart from:

Jinmao Tower
Shanghai Museum
Clubs/Bars

I am totally lost

what can you guys suggest

As mentioned above, the Yu Garden for sure. It's quite beautiful. One tip: as with any such popular attraction, consider confirming the opening time and lining up even early to be the first ones in--such spaces have an entirely different feel when there are throngs of people around, which inevitably there will be.

And consult the popular tourist guides such as Lonely Planet (consider buying a copy yourself so when friends come to visit you have a copy to loan for the duration of their stay, they'll appreciate that).

yu yuan garden and wholeseller buildings around
xiang yang market and shopping street around ( huaihai rd.,changle rd.,hengshan rd.,etc )
oriental tv tower in pudong
nanjing west and east road and people sqare ( museum,theatre, malls )
the bund ( and pudong accross the bund )
xin tian di ( bars and clubs )

take a one day trip to one of the old towns. Shanghai is now. I did Zhou Zhuang; the bus trip with tickets to the temple and old town are about 20usd and people can see the countryside and a sample of how more than half the peope live. Maybe I am too old to care which bar is where when I have such a short time in a place.

I enjoyed the Zoo and Pudong's aquarium... but for 2 1/2 days there's no time for that.
Don't bother visiting the Temple of the Jade Buddha, unless that's the only temple you'll visit during your stay in China.
Definetely:
Yuyuan and Old Town
The Bund/Pudong
Nanjing Lu
Xiang Yang market (just shopping for clothes, watches etc)
Shanghai Museum (if they are into Chinese culture)
Xintiandi

My Idea of 2.5 days in Shanghai:

(1) Zhouzhuang (my tour included a government jade factory and silk factory-very cool). Return to a great dinner somewhere in Xintiandi and finish the evening with a ride on the Bund tourist tunnel. Drinks on Nanjing Lu would be enjoyable after and give you a change to people watch.
(2) Find a nice place for brunch. Visit the Shanghai Zoo. Have an early dinner in one of the little hidden places in the Xujaihui shopping mall circle. Then catch a showing of the Shanghai acrobats. Follow up with a stroll down Heng Shan Lu, stopping of drinks/music along the way.
(.5) Try for a lite lunch at one of the places near the International Arts Factory Building, taking in the creative artistic expressions and great clothing items all around. If there is time left you might want to check out a gallery or 2 while your there.

Shanghai is a place which is both ancient and modern. so pick up some place modern like Jin Mao Tower or OTV tower and choose some places with ancient things like Shanghai museum and old towns. The nearest old town in Shanghai is called Qi Bao which can be literally translated as Seven Treasure Town. There're lots lots yummy dimsum there, and with beautiful old dwellings. If u wanna check some pix of Qi Bao. Here's some pix i took. Feel free to check 'em out.
