hi there are there any good emo or indie/pop/rock/electronic shows in shanghai? anything like finch, atdi, mars volta for emo? or dcfc, postal service, stars, lucksmiths, b&s, bloc party, gang of four for indie? thanks Smile

Rock shows are thin on the ground, but they sometimes happen at Harley's Bar in Nandan Road, SUS2, (Xuijahui) or the Ark (rip off drink prices).

Rock bands in Shanghai tend to be metal, prog or straight punk, but there are others. Lots of rock fans who post here really like Cold Fairy Land, because they are a little different.

My favourite Shanghai rock band is Marrow or Sui who perform arty, noisey rock along the same lines as Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey and Blonde Redhead. They were fantastic live, but I'm not sure if they'll reform after their singer left Shanghai to have a baby.

Electronic shows tend to be based around DJs and trance, breakbeat or house music. Some people like DKD, but I think it's cack. Madame Zung plays great music and is very mellow. I know there is a new night called Antidote at the C bar, which will have another night at the end of the month.

The Tang Hui has live music too and is the bast hang out place in Shanghai.

I know a few fantastic bands back in the UK that I would like to get over to China, but there's no money in it unless you are a big name DJ, play jazz or are really awful (ie Elton John).

Shanghai is ripe for foreign bands to start visiting as part of Japanese tours. This would in turn inspire loads of bands to start forming and organising their own shows. It seems to have happened with jazz, but the jazz clubs are basically catering to foreigners who effectively provide patronage to a legion of local elite musicians. Rock bands do it fun, fit in their music around full time jobs, have little prospect of record company support and do not have the means to tour abroad.
