| Post subject: Haunted Places in Shanghai |
Are there any haunted places in Shanghai? I heard rumors that Ming Du Chen (not sure what the english translation is) is haunted. My friend recalled seeing a lady in white walking around there late one night, however merely could be speculation. Was just wondering if anyone would be willing to share some experiences? |

This has the potential to become a great thread. I will ask around me and report my findings. |

I just asked my friend, he told me the story:
He and his friends were walking around around 3 am near Gu Bei Square, and theres a community close to it. Supposedly in the middle of the community, theres a giant well that was used as a bomb shelter. He also says that its sealed off for reasons that he isn't exatctly sure of. Rumor has it that some kids were fooling around there and one of them fell in and died. Anyways, he told me he and his friends were walking around the community, when he and his buddies saw a lady dressed completely in white. He says that she was see through, and that she was floating around the neighborhood. This freaked him and his friends out and they just ran away. Rumor has it that this incident is somehow connected to when the Japanese invaded China. |

Gubei (predominantly Japanese) is haunted because the Japanese invaded China.
Makes perfect sense to me.... |

I used to work at Ming Du Cheng (Mandarin City) in Gu Bei and spent many days and many hours there. Never did I see a ghost. A lot of Koreans and Japanese there. I don't believe in ghosts. If there were really such thing, considering the amount of humans that have died since the human species began, there would be ghosts everywhere! |

I heard that the Face restaurant is haunted. Apparently it used to be owned by some rich English guy whose Chinese mistress one day died (or was murdered, pushed down the stairs) and then her parents, who also lived in that building, killed themselves. So their spirits are there. The face of a woman in white would appear frequently and employees would be scared to death. Then one day the management had a Buddhist priest come and do some ritual thing that placed the spirits into one of the trees outside the building. Now it's ok in there.
I was also told that when the Shanghai government was biulding the elevated highway, there was one spot where they simply couldn't dig a deep enough hole in the ground, the machines could not penetrate past a certain point. Some Buddhist priest explained that the place was actually a point on a dragon's tail and it would be impossible to penetrate unless they did one thing....
So they had to build a giant silver metal "leg" for the highway decorated with designs of dragons and this would be the only thing that could break through the tail.
The moment they broke through the dragon's tail, however, the priest who gave away the secret of the dragon, mysteriously died by having all his insides and blood pop out of his mouth.
The silver leg with dragon motifs is there somewhere near Nanjing Lu. I pass it all the time but I can't recall the exact location. It's huge and you can't miss it. |

What's Mandarin city?
BTW, my favourite fact about Chinese ghosts is that they don't have knees and thus can not bend their legs. This is why many old CHinese homes have that raised plank of wood at the bottom of the entrance doorway - cuz any ghosts can't get over without bending their legs! |
