Post subject: Tax free import of car into PRC under new RO license

Greetings,

My Finance Manager, who is a Chinese, has told me that for his previous RO company in Tianjin, they had imported a car tax free from Europe into PRC, under the following conditions:

1. The car must be owned by the RO at least five years
2. The RO must be newly set-up
3. The car can not be sold, rented or leased out within those five years
4. The car most only be used by the Chief Rep or RO staff

If any of the above conditions not met, the Tax Authorities will charge the applicable tax.

I heard this also from someone else, but I am not sure if this is allowed on a national basis.

I'd reckon that most Tax Author. here in China tell you it cannot be done, so just to chash in on every import [esp. automobile].

I'd appreciate any and all input on this.

PS: if it is correct, then is anyone interested in buying a used Passat???
