| Post subject: Importing car from abroad |
If I were to buy a Nissan 350Z, would a Nissan dealership (or service center) be able to service this car (free of charge) during the car's warranty period?
My question can be generalized to any car whose make is sold here in China, but whose model is not (e.g. Corvette, SLK55, G35). |

Probably not. I checked with the Porsche dealership in Shanghai is they could service my car if I brought it from the States, and the answer was "no". Apparently different engine oil are used with cars made here vs. other countries, and that's just one of the mechanic differences that makes it impossible for local Porsche to honor the warranty I have in the States.
I have seen an old Vette in Shanghai before, so the service can be done, but I just don't know who/where to point you to. Hope that helps. Good luck. |

the short answer is a general NO to the original question
also be aware that if you import a vehicle into china you will be hit with taxes and duties. such that these additional costs are prohibitive to the the cost of doing so. which partially explains why imported and exotics are so expensive here generally. there is a way to import a vehicle temporarily using a carnet system, whereby you pay a bond that is held in a trust type account and is up to around 50-60% vehicles sale value (depending on the vehicle type) this is somewhat similar to what round the worlders and rally car teams etc do.
the carnet is refunded to you when the vehicle reaches the point of origin, and can be limited to a period of 6mths. |
