| Post subject: Chinese Cornflakes |
The other day I bought something that looked remarkably like cornflakes. I brought it home, put it into a bowl, and poured milk on it. At this point everything went downhill. Eating this stuff is like trying to eat shoe leather. I thought that if I let it soak up some milk it would soften, like Grapenuts, but instead it just congealed into a large yellow mass.
Does anyone know what this stuff is? |

I think you have to boil it with water or milk, to get some kind of corn porridge, but my guess is that this not really what you are aiming for... I have found "Toasties Cornflakes", and they are quite eatable. You can get them in most big supermarkets, I bought a 500g pack for 25 yuan in Carrefour (special offer). |

I talked to one of my SH friends today and she told me that it is not cereal. She said that I should boil it for at least 5 minutes and that it will become a "paste". I think sioux is right, that I will end up with something like porridge, but I don't really care for the texture of porridge (yeah, I know how good it is for me).
I have seen American brand cereal in the supermarkets, such as Corn Flakes and Cheerios, but I think that 20 RMB for 150g of cereal (what's available in my store) isn't worth it. I'll keep looking for a local brand, or possibly try making my own. |

recently i bought one brand,it's called ÔçÔçÂó ( zao zao mai ), can't remember the whole english name but morning something... 1 box only 11rmb,300gr with 6 small packages ( granola types ,cornflake, cereal, honey, raisins ). it tastes quite good and price reasonable. You can just pour milk, slice some banana..and tata...breakfast is ready.
I bought it in Lotus Superbrand mall..not sure whether they have it in carrefour. |

Carrefour has a range of imported cornflakes. I like the German one best. It is cheaper per 500g and it has less salt (hate salty cornflakes). |

Yup they have it at Carrefour and most of the local supermarkets. The granola is a little sweet though. |

I was served those little cornflakes as a snack at a restaurant once. (with the tea before the food arrived) They were crunchy and salty and pleasant as a snack... have you tried nibbling on a dry flake or two?
I'm really curious about the multicolored ones though... |

The ones that I got, I could hardly break between my fingers. Maybe I got a really tough set of them.
A friend came over and cooked some for me. She boiled them in water and it turned into something exactly like porriage. |

yeah you have to cook them. it's not bad, but definitely more like porridge than cornflakes. good with milk of some sort and a touch of sugar.
but just about every grocery carries rolled oats. oatmeal is far healthier for you than corn flakes. eat your oatmeal! |

You sound like my mom!
The only thing in cornflakes that is not very good for you is the sugar, right? |

Oh i agree with aquagirl...though i prefer cornflakes than oatmeal..i still eat my oatmeal everyday.. it's good for my digestion and cholesterol. Sometimes i just mix them , add some banana, raisins or pear with milk....yum yum.... |

OMG. someone agrees with me on something? i feel oddly touched...
cornflakes really are not bad for you per se, they are just not that nutritious. (but they are so good for a late-night crunchy snack!) oats have far more protein, complex carbs, minerals... all that happy horsesh*t... than corn. just the way it is. corn simply tastes better because there is more sugar in there, naturally occuring, and then whatever they might add to the flakes.
i do not sound like a mother. my avatar is giving you the finger.
OMG, i do sound like a mother. please shoot me. |

Actually I agree with her too... I just hate the texture.
My dad & I came to an aggreement long ago: he wouldn't make me eat oatmeal and I wouldn't make him eat yoghurt. |

ah, thanks! yeah, i have to force myself to eat oatmeal. it's good, but never sounds good. just not as glamorous as corn flakes i suppose.
to continue sounding like a mother: a better option than cornflakes is to go with a multigrain or wheat flake, like Total or Wheaties. so freaking good. oh my god, i miss the land of cereal. this is such an evil thread. evil! evil i tell you!! |

Did you ever that bran cereal with those square-shaped "O"s?
They were so good! But kind of spendy...
Of course, it didn't help that I would usually eat an entire box in one sitting! |

I saw a version of the Zao Zao Mai at the supermarket on the 6th floor of Nextage, Pudong. It is dirt cheap too, 10 yuan! The instructions on the package said to just add warm milk. It claims to be from Britain but packaged in Shanghai. For those who absolutely need their cornflakes in the morning, this is a cheaper option. |

I am not actually much of a cereal nut....
it just brings back childhood memories so I eat it when I am nastalgic.
I am mainly suprised that the Chinese have never developed their own baked or puffed foods from either rice or corn (when you consider how much of each crop they grow). |
