Post subject: Help needed, Chinese wedding.

What is the Norm for a wedding present for a Chinese wedding ?

Seriously.

We have one to go to next Sunday, and we have no idea what to give.

So what is the normal thong to do ?

Depends on the relationship between you and the bride and groom.

Think the last time I attended the wedding of a collegue, we gave RMB1000. But there were two of us. Also a collegue I liked.

For friends more is usually given.

"Hong Bao", red envelope with a double happiness symbol on it, 喜喜。
Amount varies based on relationship with couple.
Need to ask the Chinese component of our community for better estimate of how much, but I would likely give 500-1000rmb in most cases.

I agree with yu888. 500 - 1000 rmb is what I usually gave

seriously, nice crisp new 100rmb notes. 1000rmb to 2000rmb is about right. MUST be in the red envelope. I have a heap here if you can't find them, but the banks will all have them.

Yep Hong Bao with money. Whatever you do don't give a watch or a clock. Unless you want to make enemies for life!

I'm with a local friend, she says 600rmb or 800rmb is a good amount.
don't give an odd number 1,3,5,7, or 9.

also it depends on how close you are to the bride and groom to be.

give one hong bao (red envelope) from you and your wife.

I just recently wnt to a co-workers wedding and was told (because he is only an acquaintance), to give just 200rmb.

Funnily enough all of them and none of them all at the same time.

I recently went to a wedding of a lowai to a local, & in my opinion, i think its too impersonal to give money so went to Shanghai Tang and purchased a red (for luck) photo album along with Double (Ha)Penis card.

That way the album can be used for either the reception snapshots or Honeymoon snaps. Just a thought / suggestion for you Commando (and others)

Leather, T-back. Then again, it depends on how close you are to the couple.

alright, seriously, posts above give you a lot of ideas already. To sum it up, better give them a dule number of money, like 288, 666...6 and 8 are lucky numbers for Chinese, and since it's a couple getting married, odd number is not suppose to come out(the amount depends on how closer you are to the couple), finally put the money in a red envelop with words like 恭贺新婚 (means congratulations on your marriage), which I believe you can buy it at local stationary store or supermarket.
