Post subject: Cafe Montmartre = Crap MontMerde

Alas...so sad...

Cafe Montmartre (on XiangYang Lu right by the knockoff market) used to be GREAT. Since 2002, I'd had many enjoyable lunches there. Back in the day, it was really the only reasonably-priced French restaurant, and their authentic atmosphere was a great place to spend a couple of hours. The food wasn't 3-star Michelin, but it was not bad either.

Alas...no more...

I recently went to Cafe Crap for dinner...and had one of the worst dining experiences in my recent memory. I guess they've changed both management and chef, because the service was rude, the food was cold and bad, and the prices were totally out of line with the miserable quality.

Our soup was so watery, it was actually worse than out-of-a-can. The fish and pasta were so dry as to be almost inedible....not the same restaurant as before. And my 45 RMB glass of house red was...crap. The whole experience was painful to palate and wallet.

It's sad to see an old favorite go down the toilet. Sigh...time passes...

The good news is, there are many new restaurants in town. I recently tried a small French cafe on Changle Lu between XiangYang and Shaanxi...quite nice. In fact, it reminded me of how Cafe Montmartre used to be. The staff were attentive and obviously wanted us to have an enjoyable meal, which we did. It wasn't really cheap, but the food was good.

So if you're near XiangYang market, and in the mood for French food....just turn your back on Cafe de Crap and walk two blocks North....

That is De Lys. Never get the house wine that is offered with a set lunch... it's not drinkable. The creme brulee on the times I have been has not been as tasty as Cafe Montmartre but the entree was good. Haven't been overly impressed with the service but didn't find it lacking either.

I ate at Cafe Montmartre almost everyday for lunch for a few years. Never had a problem. Don't get over there too often these days but with winter starting, it will be back on the list. Never go for dinner because the place is downright depressing. Going to have to see if the lunches have changed that much since I was last there. When there was a chef change about two years ago, they starting serving a wonderful mushroom soup (it had previously been a few mushrooms in broth)... hopefully that hasn't been changed back. Perhaps opening a second branch has taken some of the emphasis off the first.
