Post subject: THE POLICE PROFIT FROM THESE TOURIST SCAMS!!!

I was visiting Shanghai last week (April 29 - May 9).

As I was walking down Nanjing road, my friend and I were regretably propositioned to have a drink with some guy who wanted to "practice speaking english and learn about the united states."

Two blocks off of Nanjing Road (between the large coke bottle and the bund) there is a bar called "THE EGYPTIAN BAR."

This bar makes all of it's revenue from scaming tourists.

Once we sat down in the empty bar, three girls automatically came out of the back to sit with us. They started downing shots and we suddenly realized we were being scammed.

My friend and I drank one beer each (80 yen total) and they brought us the bill for 3,870.

(The menu was in English and the bill was in Chinese).

I ended up giving the persistent waiter all the money we had on us which was 1,050 yen.

20 minutes later, we realized they had drugged us.

It was difficult to remember anything and I felt very intoxicated although I only had one drink.

We returned with the police (thanks to our friend who spoke Mandarin) and got our money back.

However, it took 3 hours for the police to show up.

AND, the bar owner was standing at the host stand with the bill and my money in his hand when we quickly rushed in.

He was clearly tipped off by the corrupt police who obviously profit from these tourist scams.

The following is the url of a picture of the bar's sign;

The following is two urls are pictures of the waiter who scammed us;

Through my research I have found out that this bar has been pulling this same scam for at least 2 years now.

NO WONDER they haven't gotten shut down yet!!

They drugged you? That's not cool at all.

What a shitty looking bar... damn place should be shut down just because it looks like it does.

Good of you to post the name of the bar along with pics to help other unsuspecting people avoid the same problem.

Places like this should be swept out of town and the owners forced to pay fines as stiff as they charge for a watered down beer, regardless of who is on the payroll. Since the police are being paid, perhaps a well placed call to the tourism board would help. Probably not.

so as a shanghaienese girl you wouldn't have a problem paying rmb3000 for two cups of tea in a crappy bar?

I was interested to read the guys had been drugged! In the Philippines there are a couple of scams:-

1. A girl will ask to be taken to the cinema, she will get you coke or something drop a drug in and bingo, your asleep in 5 minutes, when you wake up your wallet and watch etc are all gone.

2. Some girls will go to the police and tell them that you have sexually assaulted the girl, at this point the police will suggest you pay compensation on the spot. This gets split 50/50 with the cops.

There are many scams but, you can safeguard yourself a bit by following some simple rules:-

1. Take just enough cash out for the evening.
2. Do not carry all your credit cards. Maybe have one card with a small limit so if you use it and get ripped it wont hurt too much.
3. In a bar you dont know order one beer and pay for it dont run a tab.
4. If you dont want to buy the hostess a drink then tell her you have little money with you and your just having a beer.
5. Dont get sh_it faced unless your with friends.
6. Never go home or to a strange hotel with a girl or guy for that matter.
7. If you do take a girl home whom you picked up in the street then, make her go home before you sleep.
8. If the taxi seems not to know where you live get out and get in another. If you happen to be in Manila do not allow the taxi driver to pick up one of his mates, the chances are the mate has a gun and you will get robbed for sure. Use hotel taxis where possible.

This may be teaching granny to suck eggs but, it is a jungle out there and drunk westerners are definately easy targets for scams.

Post subject: Scams - art and tea

Having just returned from Shanghai and being duped by the art trick - just thought I'ld share a couple of observations. When taken to the 'Studio' - actually some rental room above Giordano - and shown the 'art', noticed there was an old guy in the room who was their 'teacher'. He seemed dis-interested in anyone/anything and the students made no reference to him neither did they introduce him even when I specifically addressed him. This would be considered extremely poor manners for Chinese - bad sign.

They then tried to encourage me to buy as they would then take my info (address etc) and we could keep in touch in the future - showing me a ledger full of 50+ addresses - I hope they enjoy their art.

I wonder if when still in the 'friend' mode outside, if one happened to mention a disliking of all art, especially Chinese art would help dissuade any of them!

One clever scam was at the far end of the bund where there was a monument and sign pointing to 'museum of the bund'. Once down there - another art museum! When asked about the musuem, oh it's been closed for a long time!

As for tea girls, has anybody ever tried feiging a heart attack, or physically making themselves vomit. It's one thing to be beligerent to try and escape, but if they think that a 'gweilo' will die while in their company it may just freak them out! It may be worth a try Smile

Be safe y'all
