Post subject: Laser vision correction

Has anyone gotten this performed here in Shanghai? Know anybody that has? The price is right and they claim to use the same machines as back in the States.

Don't know anyone who has had the procedure done here, most have had it done at home or in HK.

I'm not an advocate of elective surgery performed here. That is not to say the doctors are not trained properly and are not skilled in what they do. However, should something go wrong it may be more difficult to remedy. You should also check with your insurance to see what may be covered should there be a problem. Usually the procedure itself is not covered (although that varies greatly by insurer and policy) but there may be a clause in your policy regarding elective surgery and care provisions should there be a problem.

Should you opt to have the procedure done here, you may wish to contact your eye doctor at home to ask for a list of questions that need to be asked. Specific things for your eyes and condition. Including the machines that are used. Check the specific models. What is the servicing of the machines? Due dilligence. Perhaps the doctor has a list of foreigners or english-speaking clients who you can contact for references. What recourse do you have if problems arise?

I know a get a but paranoid about these types of things... probably more than I should...

I had my eyes done in Hong Kong earlier this year. All in all a big success I think. The Hong Kong suituation is much more reliable and better regulated in my opinion and I was happy to pay the extra money. The guy who did mine (Australian) said that they do have similar equipment in Shanghai but even the suppliers told him that the level of training in China was worse than other places. He still thinks they can do a reasonable job here, but they just cannot use the wavefront lasik machines to the fullest potential. When it come to my eyes I want the best.

My brother-in-law is an opthomologist back in the US.

He does not recommend the surgery to any of his patients because of the risks involved. And that is in the US.

i had considered getting custom LASIK here, but i was dissuaded at the last minute, and got the enhancement back in the States. even assuming they use the same machines, that tells u nothing about the skill of the surgeon who operates it.

if u do decide to get it done here, i'd go to the most expensive place. yi fen jia qian, yi fen huo ("u get what u pay for"). while that doesnt guarantee success, it'd at least make me feel better psychologically.

Thanks folks. You guys pretty much confirmed my own suspisions regarding this. I am surprise to hear it not even recommend in the States though. I know several folks back there that have had it performed. I guess maybe Hong Kong is the answer.

Thanks again.

Jack
