| Post subject: High Quality Tailor Made Suits |
Hello,
I have two friends visiting next week and they would like to get a couple of high quality tailor made (designer style) suits done in Shanghai - Can anyone recommend the best place to go, and approximately how much they would charge for this?
Thanks in advance,
UB1S |

IMO -none in shanghai... go to HK, Singapore or BKK. I've given up trying to find a good quality tailor with the right material here... also if you search the threads your question been asked many times before :sigh: |

yes, and don't believe anyone that recommends you go to Dongjiadu road: those are NOT high-quality suits.
You could go to Dave's tailor (he's not bad, but too expensive since the fabric is imported). Fabric is cheaper in HK, which is your best bet. |

I've heard the same, and also that hi-quality tailors let the customer try the suit 2 or 3 times before completing it, to have it perfectly fitting.
Still I wished to try this very cheap fabric.
A week ago I went to Dongjiadu road and ordered a suit to the shop nr 67; the tailor measured my body only 1 time and did the job to end.
I got the suit today.
The fabric is good but not excellent, and this I knew already when I put the order.
The cut is good, perceived quality is also good and I'm satisfied.
I think the price is the way to surprise visitors, not the quality: 500 rmb all included. |

in BKK its possible to get 3 well tailored suits (each of different fabrics) a couple of shirts and a silk tie for usd$179, maybe even a little less.. there are two famous international tailors recommended by VIP's and carry the Thai Royal seal of approval based in BKK who do the same for around usd$199. i've never had a complaint with the quality fit and durability... |

Go to the fabric markets yourself, it's a good experience if nothing else. You will need 3m of fabric to make a 2 piece men's suit and this will cost about 100 rmb per metre for very good quality wool/cashmere mix.
I then take mine to MAYA tailors on Maoming Lu down towards Fuxing Lu. He measures and then tailors. It usually takes 1 week for the fitting and another week for final adjustments, but he will do it quicker if requested. He charges me 600 rmb for the tailoring, so all up less than 1,000 rmb.
I've been very happy with my suits - the fabric is good and they are well made. Sure they are not up to the same quality that a suit I had tailor made at Aquascutum in london is, but that cost 700 pounds, not 70. The ones I have done are easily as good as an off-the-peg high street store suit that would cost $300-400.
Or you could take the very useful advice of sinned69 and go to another city thousands of miles away.
Good luck |

i've tried many different tailors in shanghai and I think they are all crap. The fabric is crap too. I'm sorry, but if you want good quality, tailored suits, you will not find them in China. |

I disagree with the 179 USD for three good quality ones. The ones I've been purchasing from BKK recently have been in a range of 180 USD each. This , not because of the tailoring but because of the material.
Fit has been ok with the lesser value fabrics, they just dont last that well. The most recent suit has been in good use for a year and still in shape. The cheap ones wear out in a few months. |

JD well it does depend on where one shops... there are likely more than 100 "tailors" in BKK... with prices that fluctuate accordingly... perhaps the places you have been are not the same as i... and also the materials and quality of the cut of the fabric... a little like comparing lemons and oranges... still far better than what i have found here so far for a tailored suit |

If you really want to be helpful Sinned rather than just feel superior over us mere mortals that do get stuff made in the fabric market, why don't you say where you get your clothes made in bangkok or hong kong or wherever, give the names and general whereabouts of the tailors that make clothes well so if UB1S does happen to pop over there he/she knows where to go. |

bellabella sorry there's simply one reason why i had not mentioned the addresses etc, - because i have done so in previous posts on this topic which has been asked upteen dozen times before. same as many other threads on this website (it seems like people ask the same shiet), without taking the time to bother doing a search beforehand - no doubt due to many reasons. as most of us know simply doing a search using the inbuilt search engine will get the imformation that one wants, hence my first reply to this post...
but since you ask.. there are so many places in BKK that tailor suits and womens dresses etc. but here are a few places worth the trip please note that most of thew adresses are near Sukhimvit Road, as there are many around this famed Sukhumvit Road area, and the many Soi's (Lanes) that run off it...

Tailor Made Clothes for Men
For shirts, I use Nikkermans, basement floor of the Landmark Hotel (BTS Station Nana). Very quick and can do all the styles - great catalogues of collars, cuffs, fits etc. Decent Egyptian cottons and all the latest fabrics on hand. From John Travolta to Dick Cheney. They'll sort anyone out. Mrs Nikkerman and her sweatshop ladies can cope with that embroidering of initials, on the cuffs and pockets if you are into it. In case you tend to frequently forget your name and need a reference point. GWB. It takes about two working days / one night to turn them around from a fresh measuring up. For suits, I use Rajas, on the corner of Nana Plaza and Sukhumvit Soi 4 (best go in the daytime as at night the area turns into a red light district). (BTS Nana and 150 yd walk.) This guy has a better fleet of supporting back tailors to those over at Nikkermans, so you get double linings, better stitching and reinforcements that cause a bit of bother and negotiating from the Nikkermans crew. Italian cloths and more upscale fabrics in here. Measuring up to first fitting is around two full days. Tidy up adjustments need another full day. Key Tip 1: Whenever possible you should take in a current or old suit, trousers or shirt of your own, those you like the fit of. Copying patterns avoids cock ups ...and you get what you like. Key Tip 2: If you go to tourist / hotel areas you are risking more than going to ex-pat business tailors like the above. Check the photos / business cards on the walls of fame. Locals, army, embassies, etc. you're okay. All overseas cards? Nope!
Don't be put off by the Kenny Rogers pictures on Rajas' wall. All the local tailors have them. Apparently Kenny lost his baggage when he was doing a concert, as did half his entourage, a few years back. So they needed loads of gear. Needless to say it was Ken who signed the photos, not the backing group. Another thing. You may wonder what on earth these tailors are doing displaying luminescent green jackets and bright pink DJs in their windows. Well, there's a theory that instead of getting tatoos some drunken folk get measured for bizarre outfits, dump the deposit and then never dare go back and collect the finished articles. Believe me, when you get to Bangkok and look at these window displays you'll cry tears of fashion laughter. Key Tip 3: Ladies' gowns etc... hit the decent boutiques on Lang Suan, Chidlom.
Depends how large your body is. Just remember... you can laugh and boast at how much you haggle these guys down to start with. They will be laughing when it falls apart on you two weeks later... Most tailors ask cash deposit of 50% up front till they get to know you... and some proof of which hotel you are staying in Maybe they are tired of making yellow and green stripey trenchcoats
Directions: Sukhumvit Road, Nana BTS Station - area around the Landmark Hotel and Sukhumvit Soi 4 / 3

Tailor Made Clothes for Men
This is a very good tailor who can provide you with very good quality suits at very good prices. The shop is one of the few tailors where nobody is outside 'hassling' you to come inside their shop and have look. There is no specials board outside the shop stating "3 suits for $199 with shirts and ties". NONE of that - just a very friendly, professional service . The staff communicate with you very well and always inform you when things will be done for you - I was never offered a suit within 24 hours and when I explained to the staff the length of my visit they 'tailored' the service suitably. I waited for around 2 weeks for the finished result and it showed on the suits and shirts (the timescale was partly to do with me giving the tailor incorrect neck requirements for my shirts and due to the fact that they knew that I was here for a month - so in that respect, it was in no way a timescale that had to be continually extended due to the fact that something was wrong with garments). I can only thank the staff for being so patient and so helpfull with the advice from asking what kind of suit, what it was for (special occassion / functional etc..) down to the choosing of the material and the style and finish of the suit -A true joy to work with them.
I bought the following 3 suits (1 x All Year / 1 x Summer / 1 x very smart formal-fashioned) 5 Shirts (some with different requirements regarding Cuffs, Neck Height, Shoulder finish) 3 Thai silk ties.
Price paid 25000 THB.
Address: 110-110/1 Sukhumvit Road
Phone: +66 2 656 8227 / 8228
Directions: This is between Sukhumvit Rd Soi 4-6 Between the Landmark Hotel & J.W. Marriott (same side - closer to the Marriott)

Tailor Made Clothes for Men
Tailored suits and shirts which are reasonably priced and really great quality. You choose the design and the fabric. They measure you up and 24 hours later your fully threaded up. Especially useful if one's pressed for time, as the service here is fast, though IMO there is indeed a balance between fast turn-around and getting really fine quality, as I prefer having several fittings before the final finish.
Suits, shirts, ties...
1 suit (complete), 2 trousers, 3 shirts, 3 ties all custom tailored cost around 7000 THB.
Address: SUKHUMVIT SOI 11/1 BANGKOK THAILAND
Phone: 2530173
Directions: Near Swiss Park Hotel Ask for Rama, he is a good man.

I am happy with the Tony Tailor, Somewhere along Sukhumvit. I was not all that impressed with The Image, one of the brands of Pierre, the stiching is not good and the suits are more like custom fitted, not tailored. Can't complain about speed. Things done in a mere day. The outlet that I used is in the Mezzanine level of the Sofitel Central Plaza.
Sinned. I think there are more than that. E.g. Nana corners are filled with tailor shops, larger or smaller. |

My husband is always happy with Dave's Tailor - yes, it's not cheap but it's cheaper than the suits he buys back home and are tailored to him perfectly. And the quality is very good, very much like what he buys in London. |

I think the one in Mao Ming Nan Lu (near Shanghai Tang) is quite good (haven't used it myself, but a friend of mine is happy with it). He paid 2500 for tailoring + fabric. Still less expensive than tailoring in Europe. |

Dave's is pretty good. Been around a long time and has a loyal following. English spoken there. Make sur eyou go to the one listed in sinned69's post as this is the original Dave of Dave's Tailor (There is another on in town using same name cashing in on reputation) have seen suits and repairs he has done and it looks good. Imported material as well as others.
So far as Dong Jia Du is concerned, it is NOT typically High Quality, but it is an interesting place to go, and if you have time, a good suit CAN be made if you are willing to "train" the tailor along the way. I have seen some decent everyday suits come out of there but you need top find a good one with an eye for the details. Nonetheless, it can be a tourist destination for more of a "fun" stop. |
