Post subject: Shanghai to Beijing - Travel with tour group or on own

Hey, Guys

I am going to Beijing from Shanghai with girlfriend for vacation in Feb. 2006. I am puzzled at the moment re. whether to travel with a tour group or travel on our own.

Chunqiu (´ºÇï) Tours offer a 5 day package at 1,800 RMB pp. with return airfare and 4 nights accomdation (4 star rating). It seems to me a very good deal. But I've also heard comments from locals suggesting that it would be much better traveling on own since tour groups usually cram too many destinations in a given day (approx 40min - 1 hr per attraction) & daily tour begins very early in the morning.

Any of you guys had previous experiences (either tour group or self-travel)? Your suggestions would be muchly appreciated!!!

Cheers

Jas

dunno about tours...i would never ever consider them. Speak chinese? if so then do it your self!
BJ is great but BLOODY cold - i reckon you want your own time table. AND whent its so cold that the tourist attractions are painful (believe me i did it one year with my mum who wanted to see all the sights) then you just want to do a couple or even one mingsheng gu ji a day then the rest of the day do warm things - like eating or galleries or coffee shops in beihai etc.

The 1800rmb deal for flights and 4 nights seems quite good. Unless you can get the flights and hotel on your own for a similar price then i would stick with the deal, after all, you dont have to go on every tour.

Following tour groups are always no fuss.... but less freedom. If you don't want to miss anything, tour group is the solution be it beijing or anywhere else. Anyway, if u are sick of the timetable, just skip and roam on your own.
