where are you from?
what do you know?
what is your background in banking?
how did you end up in shanghai?
are you western or chinese?
what are you willing to do?
what are your expactations?
how much salary will you ask for? etc etc
and a lot more questions are going to be asked of you from people that could help you
i can not but thereis a lot of things you got to tell people if you want them to help you
good luck

Could be hard for you to compete with interns who are paid peanuts.
Anyway spend time in polishing up your resume and send it directly to the banks and pray hard it will be answered. Beats sending it to employment agencies who charge the employers very high fees. |

Short of being a "financial consultant," finance is the hardest field in mainland china to find work in as a non-chinese citizen. First of all, there aren't many positions availible to begin with. All of the real finance work (ibanking, trading, operations, commercial banking) is done in Hong Kong. For the few positions that are open, it's very competitive at least at the entry level. (analyst/associate/VP) Reasoning behind this is that foreigners have very few competitive advantages since there are literally hundreds of thousands of chinese guys that can do the modeling. Even if your Chinese is really good, chances of finding something are quite slim.
Because you asked this question in the first place, I'm assuming that you're not qualified for anything at the higher levels. (i.e. managing director) As for running a retail branch....I assume that you'll need prior experiance, which would mean that you worked as a branch manager for a few years back home.
In any case, I can gaurantee that pay for non-chinese citizens is significantly lower than it would be in NYC, London, HK. If you have the reading/writing skills, it is possible to break into it, but you'll be able to easily make more money doing something else. I personally am giving up a-lot to work in finance here. More importantly, I'm giving up a-lot to be in China to begin with. |
