| Post subject: Books On Blackjack Strategy Worth Reading? |
Tales From The BlackJack Table
I've played my fair share of cards in my day. Two or three times a year to Vegas and most Friday nights in one of Casino Niagara, Casino Rama, or across the River in Hull, Quebec. Now, I'm not a high roller, I'll usually warm up on the $5 tables with some Let It Ride and see if I can hit something decent right off the bat to start the night off right. If it feels good, then I'm onto the $25 blackjack tables. All in all, I'd have to say I am even up, or down a little, and that's only because a $400-500 winning night would most likely culminate in a drive over to the Sundowner in Niagara to spend it on peelers!
One day, I'm going to pen a book on the crazy stuff I've seen going down at the blackjack table. From watching drunken surgeons blow $20,000 in about 15 minutes, all the while passing out Cuban cigars to table-mates, to the old Chinese woman anchor who seemed to know exactly what card was coming up next and scored a major run for the whole table that night. But the best night I ever had, was a night that would make the blackjack strategists and purists shake there heads in disgust...
It started out as a normal night at Niagara, and I had been up a few hundred and down a few hundred at times. I usually play from the early afternoon til the wee hours. After I had my "comped" steak dinner (damn, that was good steak!) I sat down at a table with me straight up against the dealer, figuring I'd get a game started and others would drop in to the remaining seats quickly. Well, this dealer seemed to be killing everybody and I was no exception for the first half a shoe. Then this dude sits down in the anchor hole, so it's just me and him and the dealer. His clearly drunken buddy was standing behind him giving him the old hardy slap on the back prodding him on. Well, this dude was playing blacks ($100 chips) to my greens ($25 chips) and he bought in for a $1,000; ten chips. He slaps two down for the first hand. What happened next was something I had never seen before and like I said, I am not exactly a pro, but i am no stranger to the table. Dealer deals me a Queen-seven, for 17, certainly not my favorite hand against the hot dealer. He deals the new guy a Jack-four; 14. The dealer is showing a six. Basic strategy tells everyone 12 and up to hold on that deal. Hoping the dealer draws a face-card and busts.
I duly stay on my 17 and what does dude do? Dude, not only hits a hard 14 against a dealer's 6; dude doubles-down on a hard 14 against the six! Talk about your BIG, BIG, BALLS! "Now that's gambling!" screams dude's buddy and gives him a huge slap on the back!
Dude pulls a 5 out of the hole! For 19! With now 4 blacks riding on it. Dealer turns a face, and then draws a face to bust! Dude's buddy gives another holler and a whoop, whoop! Dude turns to me and says, "Let's make some money!" I said, "Man, lead the way, that's one set of nuts you got on ya!" Sometimes it just pays to go with the wildman, folks. I raked in my second best haul ever; a little over $6,000.
Now, they don't tell you that strategy in any books I've read! Anyone out there successfully use a gambling strategy book? Titles please? I guess Poker is the Big thing now, but I'll stick to the Blackjack. Don't mind a bit of three-card poker or Let It Ride to mix things up a bit. |

me think that dude is just crazy and lucky who will end up with either huge winnings or losses.
that was a lucky night for you but don't count on it to happen everytime cos you know the odds of drawing a face card is relatively high. |

| Post subject: Ok, so tell me how you'd do a hard 13.. |
So, you're the anchor at a full table and the dealer is showing a 6. And everyone's got 12 or better and the inevitable happens; some crackpot in the 5th slot hits and pulls out the dealer's bust card. 6th seat doesn't know what to do now because, he would have held otherwise, but now buddy has pulled out one bust card. Now, what's the dealer got? Seems all the small are sitting in there right now, so 6th dude hits too! Another face!
You're the anchor, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, when the dealer points at you...
You're going to basic strategy, or you going with the gut feeling... or something else? |
