Post subject: ATM: watch out/check your account !!!!!

In december I have had some problems taking money from the ATM.
Three times an ATM refused to give me money and 'told'me "contact your bank".
A few days later checking my account by the internet 3 times 2500 rmb was cut of my account !
Going back to the 2 banks didn't bring me any further. They couldn't help me. My own Dutch bank has finally solved the problem after dozens of emails and phone calls from my site.

The thing that worries me most is that they admitt they wouldn't have found out if i didn't complain about this......And they can't promise me this won't happen again !

So please, check your balance if you can after every try to get money from the Atm, especially after you fail to get any !

cheers,
eric

Thanks for the tip, eric....

The other day I was at a Bank of China ATM on Huahai Zhong Lu and I a guy in front of me in line was acting a bit strange and staring intently at the ceiling as the customer in front of him made a withdrawl. That was when I noticed there is a huge mirror on the ceiling enabling him to watch the guy inputting his PIN code into the machine and observe his whole financial transaction. What a stupid design to put a mirror on the ceiling in front of an ATM vestibule! Since then, I have noticed a few other ATMs around town have the same design....just something to keep in mind.

Generally, I'm not prone to paranoia, but I wanted to pass this along since we were on the topic of ATMs....

I had a problem last month trying to withdraw RMB2000 and the ATM not dispensing the cash. I later checked and the money had been debited from my account back home. I went to a branch of Shanghai Pudong Dev Bank and they took my details. A week later I went back and was told they money was on its way back to my account (but could take 2-3 months to back). I also contacted my own bank in the UK and filled out paperwork.

Kind of annoying, but I'm sure I will get the money back at some point (albeit with a huge amount of hassle in a months time claiming lost interest etc.).

I have had a similar problem months ago. I was trying to to withdraw RMB1,000 from my China Merchant Bank account from an Agricultural Bank of China ATM. The transaction stopped at some point and after when I checked the amount, 1000 was deducted though I did not get any cash. Luckily my chinese is ok (got my bachelor degree here), I called the ABC (95559 if I remember), they asked me to call the issuer, in that case the CMB (9555), to whom I reported the problem. The money was back to my account after two weeks.
If you find yourself in similar situations I would advise you to call immediately the banks, or ask your chinese friend to do it.
