I watched some documentaries that I downloaded from the net yesterday.
One is called "The Truth about Lies": big historical lies that, due to media manipulation, were believed to be true for ages, including a lot of stuff from Stalin, Hitler, Vietnam War and ermmm some people in the Far-East too . Amazing footage, from the Ukranian Hunger (including a speech by George Bernard Shaw stating that what the newspapers were saying in the US and England that the hunger was happening was all BS) to TAM Square. I recommend it.
The other is a presentation called "Is Piracy Good?" It raises up some questions about what will be the role of TV now that technologies such as Bit Torrent make any show on the planet readilly available to everybody on the globe. I think we can conclude TV as it is today will be very shortly gone and the advertisement industry will need to reshape itself to be meaningful to people they have no control who they are.
Now I am downloading this documentary from BBC4, called The Century of the Self. It's a pretty big file (1.7Gb) but it's comming along pretty fast. Hopefully I can watch it tonight (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/features/century_of_the_se lf.shtml)
Nice thread idea by the way.
Cheers,
HC. |

Galactica (remake) season II. Watched the whole box in one day. Great series specially when you like the "old" galactica |

Mrs. Henderson - very funny movie, great story about making a theatre, showing a vaudeville show, during WWII. It was fresh and different from most movies out today. Worth watching |

Vanilla Sky. One of those movies I keep wanting to see but have never gotten around to seeing. I'd only heard negative or indifferent things about the movie, so didn't expect much. Wow, it completely blew me away. I had goosebumps and even some tears... |

I'd like to watch "Perhaps Love" è?1?°?
but the copy I have has no subtitles and I don't know if I would be able to tough it out for the whole movie while understanding only 20% of what is said.
Does anybody have a copy with subtitles? |

Got through most of Desparate Housewives over the weekend. Suitably quirky. We also managed to fit Chronicles of Riddick in there somewhere over the weekend. |

Hey,
Infernal Affairs 3
The direct sequel to number 1, once again saw the likes of Lau, Leung, Tsang, Wong and lai filling the screen.
You need to watch the first instalment due to the amount of flashbacks and references, Lai was pretty much his pokerfaced self, The relationship building exercise between Yan (Leung) and Dr Lee ( The wonderful Kelly Chen) was enchanting to watch. And of course Ming ( Lau) wrestling with his demons.
This film was at a much slower pace than the first, but had more heart and emotion thrown into it.
A fitting end to a very good trilogy.

Hey,
Switching back to Jap stuff.
Dead or Alive 2
Sees Japan's B movie favourite and Elvis/Steven Segal lookalike Riki Takeuchi and Sho Aikawa team up when both contract killers paths cross in a middle of a job.
They realise that they were once childhood friends and set off to an Island where they grew up together, they decide to string some more jobs together to do good this time, only succeeding in winding up the local gang members.
This is far from one of Directors Takashi Miikes best, but dont treat it as overly serious, its a lot of fun with some OTT bloody shootouts with the usual Miike bizarness thrown in, gangster magicians, drawf hitmen and the usual smut that you would come to expect from the man.
For a popcorn movie I give it 3/5 |

Constant Gardener - nausea-tic camerawork reminiscent of Blair Witch. Non-satisfying overall.... boring in the beginning, interesting somewhere in the middle but fall flat after. |

and only scooped one award out of 6 nominations at the BAFTA's...
I agree, I was actually expecting bigger things from this as I still rate "City of God as one of my all time favs.
Constant Gardner put me to sleep!! |

HOUSE
a pretty funny medical drama series featuring a nasty but brilliant doctor.
each episode is a cycle of prescribing wrong medicines and nearly killing the patient while the doctors try to figure out which illness it is and Dr House always saves the day by identifying a simple root cause. makes you think twice before eating the next piece of uncooked ham. |

Hey,
Bullets over summer
Good pairing of Francis NG and Louis together as a couple of cops, had a good all round feel to this film with happiness, sadness and some bloody good acting and failry decent soundtrack too. Especially Granny very well written but a sad but somewhat dignyfied ending.

started watching Two Hands last night an early Heath Ledger Aussie film - I had to stop after half an hour, i could see the whole film unfold and it was going to be bad - I couldn't face watching it!
I did watch Nanny McPhee yesterday afternoon - really lovely film! Excellent for kids or adults who like kids films. Everone acts very well in it, there isn't one bad apple. |

Hey,
Wolf Creek
Another road movie in the style of Texas Chainsaw massacre, Wrong turn etc. I found it very slow and its really only the last 20 mins when you witness some violent grissly killings played by a sadistic Mick, by that time I was getting impatient. Only other positive, was some very stunning shots of The Outback and it was based on true fact.
Was left slightly dissapointed.

Bill Murray in 'Broken Flowers', pretty good if you like his recent movies, but I didn't like the ending. |

just watched Narnia - quite disappointed really, it had a real BBC sunday afternoon special quality about it and some of the effects were really bad. I'm not normally bothered about bad CGI but there were bad mistakes in this film that made it look about 30 years old! For a Disney movie I would have expected a more polished film, but it was just so-so, cutey Lucy was the best thing in it and the White Witch. |

Watched Twins last night, an old one but still very funny.
Bellabella, hopefully its just the beginning and the sequals will be better.
Has anyone seen Seven Swords and if so, is it any good? |

Yeah maybe GC - was talking about it with TM last night and he seemed to think it was a rush job and they rushed the post production to get it out quickly - mabe in time for christmas or something. Because for a major film like that the quality should have been better. |
