I am by no means an expert in the art of picking apartments - but I know for sure you'll be paying alot more living in places like The Summit or The Shanghai Centre than other new compunds downtown.
I lived for a year in "Yi Jie Qu" which is on Beijing/Chengdu Rd's I think....it was pretty new at the time. 130 sq metres...only one bathroom though, but three BIG bedrooms. Fully furnished. 21st floor. Beauitful views of the city...5.500 a month. He wanted 8.000 and we said no way jose!
My friend has a 2 level loft style apartment (in a Chinese building on the back of Yongjia Road). Very cute...fantastic actually. He is paying 6.000 RMB a month. Tad over 120 sq metres. When I say Chinese buisdling - it is. but the aprtment itself is fantastically clean and well maintined.... |

How big is the place? Is it fully serviced (ie: daily maid service, etc.)? |

71 sq meter about. 24 hours doorman. Furnished with the basic, TV, microwave, beds. No maid service, I hire my own maid. But it does have a gym and large swimming pool, outdoor tennis court. Nice amenities. |

Your company is rich!
My client is an american company. I don't think they earn that much.... most of everyone don't have own car and own house/apartment.... everyone commutes.

Don't sell yourself too cheap. To give you an idea what local salaries are nowadays, a few examples from my own company. Manager sales RMB 32,000 per month, after sales service manager 14,000 to 18,000 per month. Manager F&A department 18,000 per month. Starting salary for engineer 6000 - 8000 per month. All local Chinese staff, all salaries before tax. On top of that they get several allowances. And engineering is not exactly a top paying sector.
So your offer of 10,000 RMB per month is ridiculously low in my opinion. The question should not be on what you can survive here, but what is a reasonable salary based on the market. |

In my opinion you are being ripped off BIG TIME. For that kind of money your apartment should be much bigger with a provided maid service. You should be able to find something just as nice for 1/2 of that money. |

Hi
We are two danish architects considering moving to Shanghai to work. We've been offered an intern position in a company. We have both recently finished our master degrees in architecture (6 months and 2½ years ago respectively). They have offered us 10.000 Rmb /month in salary each and no benefits. We think it sounds quite low. Are we able to make a living on that or is it ridiculously underpaid? We are a couple so we don't want to live in shared appartments in bad parts of the city but are looking to just uphold a decent, western standard of living.
Do any of you have any good tips on negotiating a salary and what points/benefits are important?
Thanks in advance

Expat salary are hard to judge but this is obviously wayy too low. I'm big on the experience a job can provide for me and my resume. And with someone paying this low.. you have to wonder if the experience is even good or not.
I think any expat with any decent skill set getting hired as an expat (not local expectations) should AT LEAST BE 20K. |

some of you reply without reading the original post. They are not expat. They are non-chinese interns.
You should ask yourself how much would y make at home.
20K family income is a great start and with bright future.
People here who said "you are selling you too low..." ma not even making that amount.
listne to your hearts and move on.... |

10,000 sounds very low to me.
I'm just an ESL teacher, and I live in Dalian, which is much cheaper than Shanghai, and I earn just over 10,000 a month with flat provided (and four months' paid hols).
I wouldn't get out of bed for 10,000 a month in Shanghai, especially if they didn't provide accommodation.
Mind you, here in Dalian I basically 'live Chinese' so spend very little money at all, whereas if I was in Shanghai I would want to take advantage of all the western delights - bars, restaurants, et al. |

^ and for taht same reason, the employers have mroe choices...more potential interns wanting the "China Experience". Actually, not really, they would not go to Dalian, for example, but Shanghai will do. they will take low pay b/c they WANT to come. All about supply and demand.
Its an old thread. i wonder how they did... |

I'm an LA in Shenzhen and use to work in Shanghai. Please realise that the market is very fierce at the moment for
architects and many people are only on 10000 a month. This is due to less work and frozen projects in Shanghai due to the corruption
scandal. Also realise you have little China experience and no understanding of what Chinese clients expect.
To put is it simply basically their offer is what they think is reasonable as you are an unknown.
Apartments go for anywhere from 3000-5000RMB a month depending on what you want and were the office is.
Also realise that an Chinese intern gets paid 1800-2500 a month starting and students from foriegn countries start
at 4000-5000 a month. So unless you have a strong sense of design or project management you are just another
person they have to train over the first 3 months to have some understanding of China and what clients expect.
Good luck look around and see what you can get but to be truthfully honest work for a company that inspires you or
you like the projects, there are many firms in shanghai and many are just producing crap to get by. Also be weary of
'fake country' firms - there are many in Shanghai who claim to be from Australia, Canada or Germany but who often
have little if any association with the country and you won't find a single expat in there. |
