Post subject: MP3 player?

I am shopping for a mp3 player to download my Mandarin audio lessons to learn while jogging. Can anyone suggest a model and what I should expect to pay here in Shanghai? Thanks Embarassed Rolling Eyes Question

Last year I purchased a 512 mb basic mp3 player for 580 RMB.I bought it after listening to many local mp3 players & found having good bass & acceptable headphone quality. Its of TECLAST makewith upgradable firmware which you can download from its website www (dot) teclast (dot) com.You can check out the models, some of them has prices mentioned on it.You can buy it from xu jia hui.

I found it one of the very good sounding local mp3 players with a reasonable cost.

There are so many brands models out there and they all do pretty much the same job and quallity for what you want.
A lot of the price differences are in the style/look of the device and extra features like recording etc which you may or
may not need. Shop around the XuJiaHui digital markets and try them out. The 512Mb ones around around 500-600RMB
and the 256Mb around around 400 I think.

You probably won't be able to fit many lessons onto a 512Mb player... i bought a Creative 8Gb, with photos & FM radio for 2000RMB.. am really happy with it. Or there's always the ever popular Ipods.

Thanks npaul, kuldaen & booboo for the feedback. Will stop by XuJiaHui and check them out. I think the 512Mb player would fit my needs as I believe I can fit more than 30x half hour audio lessons at a download from my laptop.

As a guideline, 512Mb generally equates to about 500Minutes at 192kbps encoding which is the usual standard for
radio-quality MP3. thats about 8 hours worth, if your lessons are voice then they maybe encoded at a lower bit rate
and you'll fit more in.

I have a 1G one. I've never seen the need for a larger one myself apart from the fact you can just dump a lot of music on
there and not worry about it later. Its more about convenience but more than anything else.

i went for an iriver brand (the quality is better)... the 512mb cost around 350yuan and the 1GB cost around 600... their still going strong, packed with features n functions into a smaller unit...

Many mp3 players are USB rechargable so you can just plug it into your computer rather than using batteries. This convenient feature, however, may have some problems. My dinky 128 MB mp3 player can be plugged into any computer and used as a u-drive without installing any hardware. However, my friend's iriver needs software to read/transfer any files, making it cumbersome to use if you want to transport files from computer to computer.

In addition to Xujiahui, the Babaiban area in Pudong carries many (many) mp3 players. There are a collection of stores/booths in a large building called Taipingyang su'ma.

You definitely want to get one thats a proper USB Hardrive/Storage device (which may have a cable or be part of the player itself). its much easier to transfer stuff, just plug and play. Most of them are.

I'm surprised the IRiver one needs extra software since it is a popular brand. Maybe there is a driver for it somewhere which makes it plug and play Hardrive.

sorry but my iriver has never needed to have software installed on any computers i have connected to via the usb port, i have simply connected it and used to to move all kinds of files to and fro, using the standard windows explorer etc... perhaps there was some issue for the one you tried, with needing updated drivers or some such thing on the computer in question???

512MB internal hard drive: The T10 holds up to 17 hours of music, and the 45-hour battery life ensures that you’ll be rockin’ till the sun comes.

Kuldaen,
The above specs came from the Circuit City store website which look like double the amount you say a 512MB memory can hold. I am puzzled. Maybe the store is perhaps exagerating the player feature.....(false advertising???). Please comment. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Its not exageration. Its the fact that MP3 encoding method is not a predictive compression method. It depends on the sort of musics/sound that is recorded. In addition, you can set the 'prefered' bit rate when you encode/copy/rip the music from CD. This can be as low as 24kbps (sounds like a bad telephone connection), 64kbps (radio quality) 128kbps (FM radio), 192kbps (CD quality) or higher. even then its still only a rough guess. My figure is a really conservative estimate based on my experience with encoding at 192kbps. Its conceivable that they can actually get double that if they lower to 128kbps or a bit lower (96kbps is popular value because of quality VS size)
