Post subject: Buying Travellers Cheques in China

Is it possible to buy American Express travellers cheques in China? We will be going home for the summer to Canada, and would like to be able to well, live Smile.
We're also currently trying to find out if anyone knows if Agricultural Bank of China bank cards will work back home. They do have the Maestro symbol on them, so should, but we found when we got here, that our Canadian bank card would only work at certain bank machines. Usually the ones with no indication that they would work at all. :p

So, is it possible to get Amex travellers cheques in foreign currency in China? And to pay for them with RMB?

Thanks.

Megs.

http://www.americanexpress.com/china/en/aboutamex/corpinfo_amexinchina .shtml

this site says that american express travelers cheques are available for purchase at 24 banks. what banks those are, i don't know but there is also a number to call american express shanghai which may help answer your questions.

the credit card... one of my BOC cards can only be used in mainland China and that is printed on the card. i have another one that was an international card when i received it, but to be honest, i have never used it overseas because i find it is easier to use my US cards.

i was under the impression that maestro is one of the symbols for ATM useage or visa/mastercard check card purchases rather than a network for the credit card acceptance which would be covered by the visa or mastercard. if a debit card, then the maestro symbol would be used to withdraw money from an ATM or debit purchases directly from your account. not really part of the credit card part of the credit card.
