| Post subject: Help- don't know how to put money on internet acct.!! |
Hello,
when we moved into our apartment, we took over someone else's lease. She had a pre-pay cable internet account with OCN (www.scn.com.cn), that was paid up through the next few months, so we just paid her for it when we moved in. Now the money's run out, and the website and hotline are only in Chinese, and there's no office address on the bill. So does anyone know how the diddly we're supposed to put more money on the account?? Does anyone else have an account with this OCN company?
If not, then please tell me how to go about getting a new ADSL account set up! Sick of dial-up!! Going through download-withdrawal!!
Thank you! |

Do you think it is straightforward if I just go into China Telecom and ask for an Internet account? I don't speak much Chinese- are they going to ask me a lot of questions, or give me a form to fill out, or will I just be able to say "Wo yao Internet" and give them my address...?
Thanks for help!! |

If your tel line is under the name of the landlord then you should ask your landlord to help to apply for the ADSL line (always need original ID documents). This could be in 2 ways. One is both signals (tel & ADSL) from the tel outlet. This is convenient and you can hook on to internet anyway there's outlet in the house. The limitation is that there is noise on the normal tel so you need to buy a singal spliter in other place you will hook on just telephone ( so I have 4-5 splitters all over the outlets!) The other method is that you ask the tel company to install a separate ADSL line - limitation is this is really separate and it is then fixed in one place and ONLY for ADSL purpose.
By the way not sure if anyone that now we can apply for our own tel no. so one can 'move' the no. with us to new places. It is also more convenient that we don't have to rely on the landlord to do any changes for us. This is more convenient.
One more tips, with the ADSL account ( e.g. with 2M speed service) then through Chinavnet one the account will give some free expenditure amount for online service (e.g. movie, music etc.) but of course the content is more inclined to Chinese market but there are also a lot of English songs & movies. Some channels are on extra expenditure (e.g. some better music sites) but the cost is just peanut (e.g. 10 or 15/month) and the charges will goes to the monthly Tel/ADSL bill. Very handy. I have been using it to listen to music/see movie/TV drama since long ago. |

We just went to China Telecom in Jiangsu Road, the ADSL is now under my name, you just only need to present your passport and pay the deposit of RMB500 (refundable when you decided to cut your line). They can speak English there and will give your ADSL line the next day. Additional charges for cable around RMB330 and one advance fee so all in all, you just only need to bring money no more than RMB1500 plus passport. |

Thanks, Bernace_03! Cable internet is what I meant, not ADSL. I don't really know what any of those things mean, I just know I want the one that has nothing to do with the phone. So thanks for that info! Oh, and we already have a cable modem box from the lady who lived here before us... do you think we have to tell them that at China Telecom? Will that make things any cheaper? Or do they require you to use their own box...? (Can you tell I'm kind of new at this?) |
