Post subject: Which Visa Will I Be On? Able to Open Bank Account?

As I will be represented but not emploted by a talent agency, and they are filing visa, letter of invitation on my behalf...which visa will i be on?

Will I be able to open a bank account so I can deposit earnings? Will an Australian passport and drivers liscene be ok to open an account in China? if not what will i need?

Otherwise any earnings will be paid through agency in China to my mother agency...and then into my account at home...i can imagine all the money being lost in transfer fees! and taking weeks to come through.

I figure if I have a HSBC account in China I can close it when I get back to OZ, and have have OZ HSBC chase up any money in the account?

If they are making a letter of invitation for you, then it would probably be a Business VISA. Who knows, maybe a Residence Permit if you are staying for a long time (1 year).

To open a bank account all you need is your passport, in my experience it was a quick and painless process. Not sure if you need to have a certain type of VISA to open the account (i.e. not being allowed to open one with only a tourist VISA).

Also, as I understand it, HSBC in mainland China is separate from HSBC internationally. So, I don't think you can have your Australian branch access your mainland account. It's basically like dealing with two different banks. That said, if they do transfer you money to your bank in Australia, it is easy to access it over here through an ATM that has international facilities (there are lots). So as long as your ATM card can work internationally (check with your bank) on a system like Plus or Maestro, then its pretty easy. Where do you plan to spend most of your earnings from this job? If it's in China, open an account here. If you plan to bring most of it back to OZ, then it's probably easier to have your agency deposit it in OZ and then just withdraw on your ATM here as needed. Once your money is RMB, it can be a bit of a pain (although possible) to get it out of the country.

My guess is that you will be on the "F" visa, which is a business visa. I believe that the laws have changed and you will be able to open an account in China with that type of visa and your passport. HSBC is kind of strange here... the banking regulations in mainland China are kind of screwy.

If I recall properly, you are planning to stay here for about six weeks, is that correct? If so, you may want to consider simply being paid in cash (very common here) rather than via direct deposit. A small but heavy safe may make the entire process easier... banking in China is a pain and takes a long time. While it may not be the safest option, it may save you time and hassle.

If you are paid in RMB, then you will have to use the black market to exchange the money back into AUD prior to leaving. If you are paid in AUD, then it may be just easier to have the money wired to AU for you so you don't have to deal with the hassles of exchanging money, opening accounts, etc... there will be transfer fees, but it may be worth it in the long run since the duration of your stay isn't expected to be that long.
