Got to agree somewhat with Rutuman's take on the situation. The crap about Shanghai being a 'sinfull and sleepless city', how 'fabulous' and 'worldly' you are, and your high flying job implies the attitude of a typical local yuppie with her head firmly plugging her arse.
Given your 'impromptu' comeback to being mistaken for a working girl ("Oh yeah, I must not disappoint you, must I? I am a call girl, but I don't answer calls and I am priceless...") I have a hard time believing your were surprised by the reception you got in Judys. You stopped by some whore bars to titillate the foreigners and got more or less the kind of attention you were expecting.
If that isn't what you are looking for then choose your venues more wisely next time. Just how 'worldly' can a local who chooses Judy's and then gets surprised at being hit on be?
And this isn't some sexist thing. I am a guy and avoid those places too for the same reason. They are sleazy cesspits (Malones included up to a point). |

The fact that Judy is a girly bar can be seen from a mile away...there are scarcely clothed ladies standing outside welcoming in guests, and for pete's sake there are even more scarcely clothed women dancing on the bar! Of course this information is all hearsay...
Honestly i think there is nothing wrong with these type of bars. Although the principle of prostitution is offensive, it is a thing that will remain long after us. I go there once in a while just to drink and look around as the atmosphere is electric/fun and the place not so sterile as more decent and upmarket places like the bund (bar rouge YUK!). Of course i keep my hands in my own pants!
But honestly you cannot have been that naive of thinking Judy as a nice place...
Blue frog next door is a nice place! Alternatively there are so many decent laowai places where people will not think you are a working girl, but probably are just drunk and offensive. Try Sacha, o'malley which can be truly fun. But if you are this wordly, then there is likely more gain to be had on the bund with sterile fun place like m or bar rouge...
BTW i consider myself a yup as well... nothing wrong with that |

Ahhh, there's a learning curve involved in finding out where the sleaze is and where it ain't. Now you know, and, um, knowing is half the battle? |

......from talking to a lot of westerners who have lived here a while, here's what I learned from them, with only some minimal first hand experience on my part:
The girls who try to get you to buy drinks for them and play games with you, if you lose you must drink, are not necesssarily whores and often are not likely whores, they work for the bar and get commissions on drinks sold. That's your way of tipping them for them keeping you company (as long as you're drinking).
In some places you tip the girls directly and you'll see the pressure to buy drinks is much less. In this case you should try to figure out if they are working for the bar or not. The possibility of them being whores goes up.
In other places, the girls just jump between your legs and after 5 minutes of small talk ask you if you 'want to leave'. Enough said.
On Maoming Lu, you can see girls standing on the street with a 'come hither' look, enough said. I don't see this much on Tongren Lu, but I don't usually stay there past midnight either.
An example of what these girls can really be like: I know a guy who is very charming to these girls, they like him a lot, and he tips well just for their company. He has asked some out on dates, and is always refused from what I have seen.
A lot of these girls are just making money for keeping guys company. Some of the western guys I know find it to be a very novel thing to engage in. Flirting with a cute girl for the cost of a few drinks, and having a few laughs. Same idea in a lot of KTV places.
From what little input I have received from western women, it appears USA woman are the most appalled by this business, and I would guess it is because in the US, you're either a whore or you're not, and 'whore' is a dirty word in the US. Also in the US, there are no bar girl companions, just strip clubs and I don't know how many of those girls would have sex with a customer. Whereas in Germany, parts of the UK, Holland, Brazil, Japan, etc. it is legal and the perception is not the same as the US. On TV in the US 'whores' are either super glamourous and unattainable to the common man, a fantasy figure, or ugly drug using criminals who would rather kill you than have sex with you.
There are a lot of 'levels' of bars, sit back and observe for a couple of hours, and you can get an idea of who might do what rather than condem everyone. |

No anger anymore. Just making observations and sharing experiences. Life is full of surprises especially in a place like Shanghai and that's why we love/hate this city. Being adults, we learn quickly how to forget and forgive in order to maintain that inner peace, hence the loss of edges (and a little tad faith in humanity ). Having a guy friend as a chaperon is cool. Still we want to do that "girls' night out" thing. Will be more careful when choosing the venue next time. Any suggestion is welcome. |
En... this is interseting post.... and thank you for this POST....
that's truth... now shanghai not have many nice place to hand out with friends...i used to like go to mural, and very like there.right now, NO~~ not so good...BUT what can you do! just learn how to forget and forgive, have fun with your friends. |

Phoenix-Phoenix - I agree with Rutuman, you sounded like you are placing a personal ad on this site b/c you know the expats are reading this site. WOW you really have a good memory of remembering all the stuffs this guy said to you under loud music while dancing with this guy. Unless you were really "closed to him" and interested in what he said, you couldn'r possibly hear or remneber every lines! For a local Chinese, your command of the English language is decent. Just curious, why do you post on this site for being a local girl? I am always interested on how local Chinese girls think.
On another note -- There are more whores in 5 stars hotel bars than customers. Just go to the Ritz second floor bar, you will see that there are many local single girls sipping water at the bar. Shanghai bars will always be full of bar gilrs in places where "western people" frequent. No surprise there. Even the Starbucks has "bar girls". They also want to pick up customer there. But no worries, if you go with family, you are safe. |

Sorry... I do not think that this really happened. Not that I think it couldnt, but it seems to be a fabricated scenario to start the old SOCIALLY DISFUNCTIONAL SLEAZY EXPAT MAN vs. MONEY GRUBBING SELL ANYTHING FOR KWAI LOCAL GIRL argument. These stereotypes are quite unfair on both sides. Such posts are relatively frequent on this site. They were amusing to me at first, but now just plain tiresome...

I'd like to know a bit more about this fencing lark...do they provide all the equipment or do you have to bring your own four by twos and hammer?
Can't see much point in it as a past time in Shanghai though, I mean noone has a garden big enough?? |

This is a dumb thread as the usual bar affair ones. Dont take it as attack phoenix but does it really worth being THAT freaked out just cuz you were mistaken as a working girl? Or maybe your pride is a bit out of track?! Am not a party animal but sometimes I would love to hit bars with friends en I avoid most of bars on Tongren road except Blue Frog. Obviously there are working girls walking around Tongren road en Judy's too is considered as a not-so-decent place. What do you expect then? Like if you want to lose weight, should you first keep yourself away from chocolate en candy?
If you are walking down XiangYang road you have to learn how to ignore these DVD en fake LV guys. Or you just simply choose another road to go. Dumbass is all around just dont let them get you down.
Btw Dragonie we need to charm the guys in gym, dont waste time at bars. heehee.. |

I am surprised by the fencing thing too. Fencing sounds like it is all fun and games. You go out there thinking about being all tough and then somebody hands you the post hole diggers and you realize that it is too much like work for your taste. Not so tough now are ya? |

Damn, I forgot about the creosote! I don't know which was worse: the sun burn or the rash from the creosote were it went through my shirt from totin the posts!
I love the smell o creosote in the mornin.
The motorized auger was the best thing to happen to fencin. worst blisters I ever had were from post hole diggers.
Thanks for the trip in the way back machine. |
