Post subject: Good tailor shop in Shanghai?

Anyone can suggest a good and decent tailor shop in Shanghai. I've been to the fabric market but seems not the type and quality I want.

There is a very good (and expensive) one in dongping lu, close to simply thai. Another really good one is opposite Okura Garden hotel... but count on ~4000 per suit, worth it! There are also some decent tailors on maoming lu, below fuxing lu... cheaper but lower quality. dont; know any others!

Thanks bernie77 and Michael, RMB4000 per suit seems a bit expensive. BTW, do I get a discount if I tell them I saw it on shanghaiexpat?

Its always negotiated anyway depending on a dozen different factors so there is really no way to know if you are getting a discount or not. One of the big differences in price has to do with what fabric you choose.. do you provide it or do they? I basically got the equivalent of 2 suits and I provided the material for one for 1800.

A friend of mine got one at silk market on Nanjing Dong Lu. It looked nice and he is happy with the quality. I think he paid something like 1600-1800 Rmb.

Sorry, I am not really sure about the address. I think it is this one. 上海市丝绸进出口公司爱丝商厦 南京东路588号 63522788

The place has several floors and is located not far from a McDonalds on Nanjing Dong Rd.

Good luck!

There is one tailor shop at Xujiahui Tian Yao Qiao Road called US POLO. The manager is from Hong Kong and speaks very good English.

Libre Dauphin opposite the Okura hotel is to be avoided. People are nice enough, but the suit is pretty uninspiring. The pants are ok, but the jacket is fairly shapeless, nonworking cuff buttons and the sleeves and the jacket length is too long. Yes, I should have picked up on these things but in all honesty, I was too enamoured with having a tailor made suit to notice at the time. Tsk tsk.

Unless you're a really weird shape, you're probably better off buying a quality off the rack. Paul Stuart, Richard James, Spencer Hart etc.

Don't believe anythig you read - the tailoring here (especially at fabric market) is cheap but basically produces a poor product - you pays for what you gets I'm afraid. If you go to a tailor in one of the hotels you are paying HK prices but without the same quality. The problem in Shanghai is that the material may be cheap but don't believe that it's super 130s or 150s even if it says so - surprise surprise. The other issue is just the lack of skill in cutting the fabric. Sorry guys it's true. If anyone is interested, I'm trying to get my HK tailor to do a trip up to Shanghai. I've used this guy for about 5 years now and never had any problems - his suits are beautifully cut and finished - have seen little else of the same quality for the same price in HK or London for that matter. Cost depends on the fabric but reckon on about 2700-3000 tops for english or italian super 130s or 150s. He'll only come up if I can get half or dozen people who are likely to place an order (and quite frankly I'd pay the airfare to HK myself if I were having more than one or more made). He'll come and take about 60 measurements (if you give him your favourite suit he'll actually make it better) which takes about an hour at your office/home/his hotel. He brings the fabric samples with him and unless you blow the froth offtoo many beers he then has your pattern for life. You just then need to choose the fabric. Oh and off the rack?? Come on...why pay 6000 Kwai for a designer suit that was made to fit a computer model. You can pay half of that and get something that fits you...for whom it was made!

PM me if you're interested.

I believe that it must be very careful when choosing the tailor. I agreed with PaulM that those at fabric market are crab. I'd rather pay more instead of having a **** quality stuff.

erickoen- I'm working at Xujiahui, I can go and check out this tailor shop. Please tell me where is it about on Tian Yao Qiao Road. BTW, have you or any of your friend made any suit there?

The tailor shop called US POLO ASSN located inside The Ascendas Plaza on Tian Yao Qiao Road by Nan Dan Dong Road. I have had a special package cost less then RMB6000 with 2 suits, 2 shirts, 3 ties and 1 cufflink. The fabric are very fine and carftman is good. The shop is owned by a HK tailor, so quality can be guaranteed.

You can try Tailor Dave. He located at No. 6, Lane 288, Wuyaun Road , Xuhui District. (check his website). Last year I let him made 6 shirts (extra long sleeves). I used them every day. My friend recommended him. He went there for all his suits. Not cheap and no discounts. 1 shirt (including fabric) cost around 300-400 RMB. Suits I don't know. Tailor Dave can also be found in PortoMan Hotel.

Dave's suits are between 3000 to 9000 RMB, depending on the fabric you choose.

I've had one suit made by him and I am very pleased - I only wish that I had initially chosen a darker material.

I have also read in a separate thread that Dave at the Portman is not associated with Dave at Wuyuan Lu. The Wuyuan Lu is the original, so I'm lead to believe.

Yes, Original Dave's Tailor is now the one at No. 6, Lane 288, WuYuan Rd.(near WuKang Rd.) His number is 5404-0001. His original space was taken over by someone else who unfortunatley tried to use his reputation to build a business. Oh well. Ayhow, Dave's does great work, have seen his suits as well as his repair work. he is willing to find teh righ materials, something that is tough to do here in Shanghai. its not totally unavailable, just difficult to find.

As for quality tailoring, it exists but may be really challenging to find given language barriers etc... HK has much better workmanship overall for sure, but it does not mean good tailors dont exist here. juts a lot tougher to find.

Anyhow, best way to find out is to go by and see for yourself.

Cheers!

OK, what in regard to a decent "Chinese only" tailor? At the prices mentioned above it might be cheaper/better to just go to HK.

Add to the quality "+English service for foreigners". You can get good quality tailored shirts (100% good quality cotton) in HK for less than 200RMB.

It would most likely lead to the "Fabric Market" which is closing soon; thus the need for new contacts.

Edit: OK, Fabric Market Rellocating
