| Post subject: For the ladies--SKIN care |
Is it just me or do you also think that the water in Shanghai robs a lot of moisture from your skin? I've been here 2 months, been using the same cleanser as before...but now I have to use FIVE times the amount of cream on my face after cleansing.
Is it the same for you? |

Yes I agree, it could be the water but also I think the air here is really dry, though I have heard the summer will be more humid.
I am using cleansing oil now instead, Shiseido "perfect oil", maybe you could try that?
BTW which moisturizer do you use? |

All my life, I'd been lucky never to have pimples. But now I am breaking out like an adolescent!
Have been here 4 months and I hate the metamosphosis my skin has gone through...
I use Nivea's Intensive Moisturizing milk. It's a dark blue bottle and it's pretty good.
BTW, have any of you felt a burning sensation when you apply moisturizer on your face, right after having washed it with a cleanser? Only goes to show how dry the skin gets.
Let's all just vow to drink up as much H2O as possible. That's the only way we'll keep ourselves hydrated. |

I think it is all the chlorine in the water--it makes your whole body more dry. My hair has turned to straw, and every time I leave the country, it is back to normal within a day or two. Once in a while, when I can remeber, I rinse with bottled water. Just wait 'til summer though--UGH! You'll be GUSHING oil you never had before, and EVERY day is a BAAAAAAAD hair day. Summer in Shanghai is a big beauty challenge....sigh. |

Advice from an old bird with very dry skin:
1) Moisturize right after your shower. Your skin will retain the moisture better.
2) Do NOT take hot showers. Keep the water as cool as you can stand it.
3) Drink a lot of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
4) If your skin burns or itches upon application, switch to a product with no scent or dye.
Item no. 2 is a recent discovery. I adore hot showers, but using cool water had made a huge difference for me already. |

Cool water baths eh mama Goosie? Brrr... but I will try it.
Any scientific reason why? |

Goosie has the right idea, although I haven't been able to forgo hot showers yet (the dermatologist and hair dresser always stress the importance of it).
Another few things that are helpful in combating dryness:
1. Exfoliate, Exfoiliate, Exfoliate - face and body. H20 makes a great body scrub that really works. Most major skincare lines have a facial version. At the very minimum, use a loofah, puffy or body brush while in the shower.
2. Use a nightime moisturizer on the face and neck - especially this time of year when the humidity levels are lower. Using a daytime moisturiser doesn't cut it and it's better to let it soak in overnight. For the body, I use the same Nivea that Trix does... it really is the only one out there that really works.
3. If you use a toner, find one with salicylic acid, it whisks away dead cells and minimizes the pores. Note that it is a bit drying but if you use a good moisturizer after you will be fine. Loreal has one here that lists salicylic acid in English.
4. Consider having weekly or bi-weekly facials... a professional cleansing plus proper application of products makes all the difference. We all know that slap and dash routine we use.
5. A final note - if you are going to invest in anything, make it a good moisturizer. Soaps and cleansers are rinsed off the face and therefore only need to be gentle and to clean - use a basic one and put your money where it counts... in the ingredients that are going to stay on the face.
6. Hair - only use salon-quality shampoos and conditioners. The others can be too harsh. Treat yourself to a deep conditioning once or twice a week by using a super concentrated conditioner and letting it soak in for several hours or overnight. Olive oil is great for the hair and works wonders when used once a month. Natural Beauty is a line of produts available here but the gem of the collection is a hair oil which really revitalizes stressed tresses. |

Trix... the reason for the cool showers is that hot water strips moisture from the skin and hair more rapidly than cool water. Think of cleaning grease... if you use hot water, it tends to break it down more quickly than cold water. If you can't fathom the idea of a dousing in cool water, then rinsing your hair in cool water at the very end of the shower will still be an improvement.
Another thing to help the skin is simple baby oil. Applied directly after showering and before toweling off it works wonders. A bit heavy for daily use though. Nivea used to have an oil that was light and Neutrogena's Seasame Oil are both good alternatives for days when you are in a rush and can't apply body cream/lotion directly. |

Well, you learn new things everyday.
Moisturise/Oil BEFORE towelling off huh? That's new.
Now why didn't we girls grow up bathing this way? Old habits are so difficult to change.
Mags - any good parlour around the Jing-an/French concession area that does a good face and hair routine? I think I need professional help bad. |

Ooohh... don't moisturize before toweling off, only use oil before toweling off (especially if it's a heavier oil)... think of it as trapping the water back into your skin and creating a barricade from which it can't escape. Apply moisturizer when skin is toweled off, but still damp.
Sass and Anniboodk like a facial place called Soothings, which is at 429 Yan An Road, near Zhen Ning Road (6248-5180). I am trying a new person who comes to the apartment... have a feeling she knows what she is doing and if all goes well, I will send you her contact information.
For hair, I do it myself. Most places charge upwards of rmb400 for a professional conditioning but i can't stand just sitting in the salon... bring most of my conditioners over from the US, but there are a few here which are excellent; Loreal Kerastase Oleo Relax is excellent as is the hair oil for dry and damaged hair by Natual Beauty (rmb360 and rmb200). Watson's stocks an olive oil which works well or you can pick up one at the supermarket. After washing and towel drying, apply conditioner, comb thru, wrap in saran wrap and top with a towel wrap (the plastic wrap is important). Sit around for a few hours or go to sleep. Rinse and you are on your way.
Speaking of olive oil, a woman gave me a tip over Christmas of using a tiny dab of it (she stressed that it was to be extra virgin olive oil) on your face when it is extra dry. Haven't tried that yet but am planning to pick up a bottle in the next few days to give my facial moisturizer an added boost... my skin looks as dry as the sahara these days.
Dry skin and hair... it's a neverending battle... even in the humid summers I still have them. Grrrrrrr. |

good tips guys! I don't have trouble with dry skin on my face - quite the opposite actually, but I do with my body and hair - where do you get those hair condidtioners Magnolia? from that special store in times square or salons or from watsons or wherever? I've been trying the baby oil thing on my skin too but after I've towelled off - surely if you do it before your towel will get all oily, no? |

the conditioners... kerastase i pick up at Eric's, but they carry it in lots of places around town. by your place, there is a small hair salon near that dvd shop on hong mei road and they carry it. for the natural beauty oil, i get that at orient shopping center, basement level but have seen it elsewhere. i can always grab one for you if you want to save a trip.
towels... they don't really get too oily, but be careful not to use it to dry your hair with the same towel just in case. i am pretty lazy and tend to drop towels on the floor after use (especially when in a rush) so they get washed after one use most of the time so not something i worry about. even when i put it on after toweling off (never baby oil though) i still put on a robe and fully dry before dressing so its kind of the same thing... my robe isn't oily on the inside... the terry absorbs it. |

I have been using Origins products. I brought extra with me until I can find other products locally available. I'll try that Nevea one! |

Origins uses an organic approach... the key to that is movemnet, meaning it will work, provided you take time and care to allow it to seep, soak and energize, |

The problem is that now I don't need to provide all the movement for it to soak in, and the skins soaks it all in--5 times more the amount!! It gets expensive for $30 on a small jar, and the jar will now only last me 5 times less... |
