| Post subject: ShengSi Island |
Might anyone know anything at all about this island (or group of small islands) in Zhejiang Province? I have a chance to travel there and looked on the web for info, but could only find repeated references to a fishing vessel which sank and left 8 missing in Jan. of this year.
Thanks for any insight or advice. |

no you dont need a local boat - the bus station near the Nanpu bridge runs a bus out to the ferry terminal where you board the ferry - it's about an hour and a half bus ride and a two hour ferry ride and at posting I honestly can't remember cost but it was cheap...
as to the island itself -
we went last year in early June - compared to Shanghai it is very much "real China" and if you are unable to get around in Mandarin (at your own comfort level) then you might encounter frustrations as we experienced very little English - the island caters mainly to Chinese tourists and during our weekend stay we saw only one other Western group as we were boarding the ferry to leave... that said we really enjoyed the relaxed pace of the island
we went for the seafood - very fresh, very cheap and very good
the island has a fairly decent swimming beach which was practically deserted when we were on it (the weather was gorgeous)
the island's main temple is one of our favorites in China - active, colorful, uncrowded, friendly, genuine
from our hotel we walked down to a park near the water and enjoyed watching the locals and the fishing boat activities
all in all it was a sleepy, relaxing, inexpensive escape
but I guess it depends on what you are looking for when you go...
for travel geeks - the ferry takes you passed the bridge they are building linking Shanghai to Ningbo which was pretty neat... |

The ticket that is good for both the bus and ferry costs 104 yuan last year. The name of the port is Luchaogang. |

I think I've decided, based on comments here and looking at pics and blogs, that I'll go. It's a company arranged trip, so I don't know about transport costs for the ferry or other details... it all awaits. I'll post a review on this thread upon our return. (Trip is in mid-April).
Many thanks for the feedback. |
