I've heard that pollution is quite an issue in Shanghai. How does this affect daily life (or not)? |

I live in downtown Puxi, and while it's certainly there, I don't find it to be as much of an issue as some people make it out to be. Generally, when walking down the street the air is fine. Periodically a really dirty bus may come by and then it gets pretty nasty for half a minute. Mind you, I have lived in large cities all my life, so I am used to it to a certain extent.
What I really do notice is that the skyline always looks hazy. A really clear day is relatively rare. It's gross to look at but I don't have any trouble breathing or anything. |

Eastbound, yes pollution here is a problem and yes it does affect daily life.
I choose to cycle in the city and have certainly noticed the traffic fumes but only really during the daytime. One can taste them in the air and they have on occasion caused me trouble breathing or made me feel dizzy. I guess that cycling would probably be best avoided if you are an asthmatic or have any chest problems.
Agree with notadam, as the sunshine in the city is really hazy so days can be hot but not particularly sunny. This isn't just caused by traffic but principally by what is kicked out of the air-con units. |

Most pollution in the air here in Shanghai is actually particulate matter, not automotive or a/c exhaust fumes as previously surmised. The lareg amount of construction here in the city produces tons of consttruction dust that hangs in the air and to an extent, one can notice its pressence, especially when riding around town and such. But whether it affects you wil depend upon your tolerance to stuff in the air.
As fo rthe garbage, it is all shopped out to landfills that later become parks and building sites. Who knows what used to be under the complex we live in now...?
River pollution has decreased in recent years as has air pollution to an extent due to the removal of instrustrial facilities from the city proper. |

I have lived in New York City for over twenty years and I can tell you the Big Apple's skyline is definitely not as hazy as Shanghai's in the past 4 months I have been here. I can just imagine that this hazyness probably gets even worse here on hot summer days. I really cannot believe that all the construction in Shanghai could cause such hazy days. |

I was reading the South China Morning Post on Sunday I think and read about one of HK's top distance runners moving away from the island to New Zealand due to pollution concerns. I was thinking "ok, pollution is a problem in HK", but Shanghai! Mama mia! Here it is full on...BUT this said, if you are running and riding your bike on busy roads downtown, then it doesnt matter where you are in the world you are still going to get a mouthfull of fumes... |

The pollution issue also perplex me recently. I live in Puxi, every morning, I dressed clean then go to bus stop, although the stop is just near my house, I have to walk 150miles, I could meet 2-3 cleaner sweeping the road, and have to endure the tail gas of automobiles, very upset. Then some friend suggest me to have a trip to Hangzhou not for travel, but to wash my lung. It is said that After most people traveling to Yunnan province, they wouldn't want to return, attracted by the beautiful scenery and the pure air. I totally agree, maybe after my retire, I would go there. |

Are air purifiers available in Shanghai. I know of a Sharp PlasmaCluster FU-888 that is available in Hong Kong and Singapore. Is this range available in Shanghai and at what price? |

I'd buy them in Singapore and Hong Kong. I've never really encountered them here in Shanghai...but if anyone knows where I can get them, lemme know thanks. |

Shanghainese check like this; the sky is only blue once in a while and living here for a longer period of time I've started noticing that as well
Airpollution is a problem and you can read about it in the newspapers once in a while. |

The pollution here caused me some serious sinus trouble. I was getting infections ever few months. I took to rinsing my sinuses with warm salt water, and the situation has drastically improved.
other people's asthma has been affected, too. |

So what do you all do to combat this pollution? Do you all use air purifiers in your home? If so, what models are best. This will help me decide whether to bring over my Sharp Plasmacluster or not. I will be leaving this coming Saturday. |

Bring something. anything is probably better than nothing. We don't have one, but life would probably be better if we did. |
