I have been to Vietnam quite a few times. It is not a quiet country but one of my all time favourite places in the world is Hoi An on the Vietnamese central coast. It is a world heritage listed town. Also has a great beach there (part of the famous China Beach, miles of unspoilt sand and clean water), lots of places to stay, great food, galleries, tailoring and wonderful people. I just love this place.

Hope this helps. |

Maybe look at Evason Hideaway at Ana Mandara:

Near Nha Trang but a secluded island (actually a penninsula but only accesible by boat), you can have your own bungalow on the rocks in the water (you need to row a boat to get to the mainland) or in the forrest hills where monkeys come down to play in your private pool. It was a amzing - a bit of a splurge, but I highly recomend it. We had gone there for our honeymoon and loved it. |

Heard a lot about Ana Mandara, too. But the price of 280 USD for the cheapest Double-Bungalow was a bit toooo high...
A little bit cheaper - and generally more calm than Nah Trang - is Victoria Phan Tiet in Mui Ne.

was there two weeks ago and for us it was Paradise on Earth!

I haven't been to the North so i can only comment on the Southern Beaches. plus i'm a biased South Vietnamese anyway and don't like it up north
but the three main resorts in the south are Phan Thiet/Mui Ne, Nha Trang and Vung Tau. There are also a few small resorts that are newly opend and being developed between Vung Tau and Phan Thiet.
I definitely prefer Mui Ne in Phan Thiet. Nha Trang is a bit too commercial to me I think and VungTau is just Saigon's rubbish dump. Mui Ne is a fairly new resort area where the building/zoning laws make sure that there are no buildings over 4 storeys near the beach so you get mainly bungalow style resorts. And they've kept most of the original coconut, banana, papaya(dudu) and DragonFruit(ThanhLong) trees so it has a much more tropical feel than either Nha Trang or VungTau.
There's not much to do in the way of nightlife and extreme sports like clubs, jet skiing etc but if you like just relaxing on the beach, eating fresh seafood and maybe doing a bit of Kite Surfing or Sand boarding its the place to be. The Sand Dunes around Phan Thiet are pretty amazing at Sunset and Sunrise. I stayed at the Ocean Star Resort.
Here's the link to all the resorts and info on Mui Ne

What are the beaches like in Vietnam actually? So far I was always pretty disappointed in Thailand. Most of the beaches are too shallow so during low tide and all afternoon there is no water and it looks pretty crappy aside from the problem of not being able to swim. Can be very annoying. Happened in Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Phan Ngan. Phuket was ok cause the beached tend to start off a bit steeper.
I looked at some of the pics on the muinbeach site and it looks similar. Surprised they actually show that. Usually you only find out once you get there.
Want to go to Vietnam in May too and hope to go to a beach where I can actually swim. |

I was in Vietnam last July. Went to beaches at Nha Trang and Hoi An. From what I remember they were better than in Thailand as far as swimming goes. They got deep enough to swim fairly quickly. Also, sharp rocks and coral was less of a problem than in Thailand. Hoi An was funkier (in a good way) than Nha Trang. Nha Trang was a typical touristy resort town, more to do, but less character. |
