they just do.

i have heard cats eat grass, leaves, plants etc because it contains nutrients and they have some inner-cat telling them that it is healthy. my cat eats fake plants so her inner-cat must be malfunctioning.

perhaps it's the same for dogs. maybe he needs rufage in his diet.

Lots of times animals do that in order to puke according to my pets Vet. helps bring up hairballs for cats.

Think this is a bit of a joke. Like the joke about the Koala that Eats, ROOTS and Leaves.

This is very normal for dogs and cats. They need extra ruffage in their diet sometimes, not for the nutritional content but rather for the cleansing effect.

Mat, I though the joke was "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" or are you talking about a different joke? Please clue me in.

whenever my dog used to do that, my vet said it was an indication of a sick stomach, and to try not to let her do that.

my god, I am serious. Every morning when I walk her, she will do her share of poo-poo and then sniff around and sometimes aggressively pulling the grass out and chew on it. At first, I thought it was just her playfulness but it continues...........
Oh, she does puke a few times last week (in the middle of the night )..........

Also, she enjoys barking excessively whenever someone passes our door, is there a civilised way to tame her ? Some say mongrel is tough.....I am willing to try.........

janlynn's right it helps them spew in order to get rid of any bugs in their tummy.
As far as the training goes try a plastic bottle with some noisy little bits inside (nuts and bolts) When she starts to bark throw the bottle on the ground (not at her) and she will get to associate her barking with the negative scary noise of the bottle.
Mongrels are generally easier to train than pedigree dogs! They say that these dogs have a large gene pool so are often smarter than their inbreed pedigree friends.
Good Luck!

We have four cats and they all like a bit of grass....not the grass grass kind. I have to cut grass every morning for the guinea pig and they nick it from the container.

In addition one of the cats goes mad over dried seaweed nori.

Is you doggie a kind of shepherd dog? If so, my explanation (though not scientific) is that eating grass is an instinct inheriting from his ancestors who learnt eating grass from sheep. Mr. Green
