Keeping a big dog in an apartment is not only a challenge for you but also a hardship on the dog. All dogs love to run and play, but a small dog can do this in your apartment without destroying the place.
Some good small or medium sized breeds are:
Corgie
Cocker Spainel
Terrier
Dachshound
Beagle
Pekingnese
Miniature Poodle
Chihuahua
etc...

also many dogs that are normally large also have a miniature breed or toy sized breed (like the poodle for example)

Why don't you ask O'Malley to help you find a dog: I know they held an "adoption day" a couple of weeks ago.
BTW I believe dogs are friends, so... would you BUY a friend? Just go to a dog's house and make a needy mongrel happy!

corgie, cocker, mini poodle, small mutt

beagles like to run too much and howl really loud

i love big dogs like labs and goldens but they are wrong for shanghai if you live in an apartment

no f-ing husky unless you hate dogs and like to see them suffer.

I've always wondered what dogs the Cantonese and Hakkas raise before they kill 'em and eat 'em. Must be the world's worst dog.

Seriously Nathalie, raising a husky or any other thick coated dog in Shanghai is a very cruel thing to do. These dogs are not meant for hot weather, and unless you plan to leave your air-conditioning running 24 hours a day then the dog will be miserable during Shanghai summers.

As far as the cost is concerned, usually normal dogs from a common breed are not that expensive ranging from free (0$) to maybe a few hundred dollars. (unless its a show dog with papers and such rot)

But keeping a dog is very expensive! You probably have to register the dog with the local authorities $$$, then it needs rabies shots and other immunizations $$, yearly medical check with a veternarian $$$, medical expenses if the dog should happen to get sick or injured $$$$$ (usually about 75% price as the same care for humans), plus obediance school$$$, dog food $, replacing the carpets it craps on while you are house training it $, replacing the shoes it may eat while it is teething $, kennel or babysitter if you want to go out of town for a day $. The list goes on......

I'd imagine the cost and time investment would be nearly half as much as raising a child and if you think raising children is cheap and easy then we should start a separate thread on that topic.

Raising a dog is a big commitment and is best done by a family with a yard. If you live in an apartment then it can still be managed but best only with a small or medium sized dog (NOT A HUSKY). If you are single and have a busy life but still want a pet, then get a cat instead. They require much less from you emotionally and physically, but are still a pleasure to have around.

Personally I'm sticking to the aquarium.

Well said Ben.

Though I am not convinced about cats being a pleasure to have around. Wink

Short of adopting a child, taking in an homeless pet is one the best things you can do.

http://scaashanghai.org/index.shtml

This is the second chance animal aid website and if interested has more informaiton. I think they are having an adoption day this coming easter sunday on the 16th. They also have pictures of some of the dogs and cats up for adoption so you can take a look at them. I think they ask for a 500 RMB donation if you adopt any of their pets since they spend quite a bit of money taking care of them and having a vet check them out and make sure they are healthy. So the fee for getting a dog from SCAA is not much. Vaccinations are not too costly here but if your dog has any health issues it can get quite costly. Also you need to get a license for your dog from your local police station each year. This cost 2000 RMB if you are in the inner city road and 1000 RMB is you are in the outer city road from what I understand. Apparently they have been in the works to try to lower this fee but so far nothing has happened.
I have to agree with travelinjack3 that I'm not convinced that cats are a pleasure to have around... There is no substitute to having a dog... but I guess there are some nice cats out there just not for me. Last time I fostered a cat it decided that my dog was it's playtoy and would chase and bite her tail for fun...

Good luck!!!

my friends told me that a breed husky it would cost 4000 or 6000 $$$$, so maybe I am not so rich on getting it from the pets shop, so I need to get a puppy which it only would cost around 1000 $$$ to treat with.......

Huskys are notorious for running away from home and often have a lot of emotional problems.

IMO, mutts are the best dogs to have - they are most often the most normal type of dog (provided they did not have a terrible history, were beaten or something really sad like that), they are usually the healthiest, friendliest, calmest, etc. Pure bred dogs are all bred for a particular quality, i.e. hunting or physical looks. Such selective breeding leaves them deficient in other areas, like their health or personality. Pure breed require specialized training and loads more needs than the common normal mutt. Even very "normal" purebreeds, i.e. retrievers, shepards, etc, are more likely to suffer from a variety of health issues than mutts.

My sister in law has a HUngarian Vizla (sp?) - a beautiful showdog from a top breeder. This dog has so many issues and has to go to two different dog schools, special private dog therapy, takes medication to calm down, destroys the house when left alone due to seperation anxiety, plus it loves rolling in fox poo. To me, this is a dog that nature never intended to be born - the result of highly managed eugenics. A showdog yes, but a genetic disaster.

If you must get a pure breed (or any animal), one interesting piece of advise is to avoid animals with albino pigmentation - pinky eyes, white skin (not fur, but skin - often white fur is growing from off-white skin and that's ok). Such albino animals are more likely to be abnormal in other ways and have behavioral problems. (Read "Animals in Translation" by Temple Gradin for all this kind of info.) Huskeys, sorry to say, frequentely have albino pigmentation due to excessive breeding which accounts for their erratic behavior.

Stick to mutts! There are also so many of them that need to be adopted......

Or get a cat ; )

Get a black one, they taste the best. You string them up then beat them with bats until they're dead. Apparently the fear and andrenaline makes the meat tastier.

Hate to change the subject to eating dogmeat here, but in actuality, stressed out, battered animal flesh yields the worst tasting meat - bruised flesh is damaged muscle tissue and it is hard to chew and tastes bad. Have you ever had a great steak and there is a random grisley bit in it? It's likely that that's where the cow had a needle injection in its body (or banged itself against a chain or something protruding from the pen.)

Again, sorry to be gruesome in a nice thread about puppies. I have too much useless information to share.
