If you are in Southhampton then make sure you go to Portsmouth. If you do not have a car then then go by train but try and make sure you get of at Portsmouth Harbour station. Why? The historic Navy Dockyard is adjacent.
In the Dockyard you can'
1.Go on board HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar and still the oldest commisioned warship in the world.
2. The Navy Museum is chock full of British Navy History. They even have the coat Nelson was wearing when he was shot on dislay. The Queen has the musket ball.
3. Visit the Mary Rose and Mary Rose musuem. The MR was Henry VIII finest ship and sank off Portmouth and is about 1/3 preserved. The museum is superb.
4. Visit HMS Warrior, the RN's first steam powered iron clad.
If after that you are not fed up with things nautical head across the harbour on the Gosport Ferry to visit the RN Submarine Museum. There you can see the RN's first submarine the Holland 1, go on board an old diesal-electric boat as well as see X-Craft and other exhibits from the RN Submarine Service.
The water front has some decent pubs too.
Just north of Southhampton is Winchester and old Cathedral city. Nice small place and famous as it was the seat of the Kings of Wessex before the nasty Normans came and tried to rule the Brits.
London has too many sites and sadly the bastards are charging an arm and a leg to get in places like The Tower of London (GBP22 when I last went) but if you do go, go early morning so you can get a less crowded view of the Crown Jewels. The Tower Armories exhibits are good too.
A trip down the Thames on one of the many small boats is good. Takes you down past where the Mayfair set out for the Americas, Execution Dock (opposite the Prospect of Whitby), Isle of Dogs (where the Kings kept their hunting dogs), and down to Greenwich, where the 0 degree meridian lies, plus there you have the Greenwich Observatory & Park, Greenwich Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum.
If you have time count the number of breasts in the ceiling of the Naval College Painted Hall. there is an odd number......we used to do that when it was a Naval college and after dinner speaches got boring.
There are also the free museums such as the Natural History and the Victoria and Albert in Museum Row. There is also a free museum in the Bank of England.
Camden Locks is worth a visit if you are interested in browsing antiques. Huge area.
Good pubs are easy to find and many have a history behind them. The Prospect of Whitby on Wapping Wall is good, as are many of the older pubs in the East End.
Check out what shows are on at the theatres in Piccadily and Leicester Square area. Tickets can be had from many of the ticket agencies around. |

Also you could go to the Tate Modern and the London Eye, maybe the Natural History Museum.
And you could go to Paris on the Eurostar for the day, it's only 2:30 hours and it is half price if you are 25 and under. I used to love that journey.
The New Forest is lovely but it's just a big forest. You could go horse-riding though. It's more like somewhere you would go walking with your family though. OK scrap that idea.
Dorset and Devon are nice but there is not much to do apart from walking + afternoon tea. There are some nice beaches, like Durdle Door.
Ummmmmm....I will try + think of somthing else. |

all museums in London are now free - which is an opportunity not to be missed, also the tate modern and tate britain are free too and have some great collections. take a walk around the old city of london - around Bank, St Pauls and Liverpool street stations (everything is in terms of the tube station stops inlondon!) it's especially nice to do late at night without all the suits there.
checkoout the markets at Camden Lock and Spittlefields, visit Covent Garden, watch a show in the West End - get half price tickets the same day you want to see one at the half price ticket booth in Leicester Square (I used to do this as a studetn!) |

if you put 'bed & breakfast hampshire' into google you should come up with plenty of info. Hampshire is the county BTW. Good pubs all around and some nice small towns and villages to gove you a taste of country rather than town.
Use the website www.multimaps.com for the UK it is free and you can check the location of the places mentioned plus print off the maps. |

When visiting London I suggest you take the Big Bus Tour. It's very practical because you can hop on and off bus stations near London's tourist attractions. You can take a peek at www.bigbus.co.uk for details. Higly suggest you visit BA's London Eye, Madame Tussaud's, any of the British Museums is a treat (Natural History Museum has a dinosaur exhibit which is a must see), and the usuals: Tower Bridge, Buckingham, Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, etc. |
