We were in a similar situation last month, although our family was visiting for a couple of weeks. Here's what we did -

Day 0 - Took the Maglev back to LongYang Lu from the airport [we live near Century Park, and the flight times were conducive for this]
Day 1 - Visited Renmin Square - did the museum - had Korean lunch at the restaurant on the top of Raffles mall - rest of the day - museum
Day 2 - Nanjing Lu - morning - had lunch at a great restaurant in Super Brand Mall - spent the afternoon haggling on XianYang market
Day 3 - Spent most of the day in Super Brand Mall - lunch in HongMei Lu [Delhi Durbar] - JingAn temple after lunch - then we took the 7:00pm train to Beijing
Looking back, the train itself was perhaps the most memorable experience in this trip. We were 6 of us and a little baby, we'd taken adjacent compartments - soft sleepers [Train # Z14/Z21], and had a whale of a time in the evening. The sleep was comfortable, the quaint little villages before Beijing in the morning were beautiful
Day 4-6 - We spent 3 days in Beijing [we did not do a package tour - rather we rented a Jin Bei, and hired a student guide who was studying history and it was well worth the time and money]
Day 7 - Back in Shanghai. We did the Wildlife Safari at Nanhui --- the safari was good, there was a seal water show [didn't understand the language, but the antics we hilarious, the walk around the park was awesome - we took pictures sitting on a tame lion/tiger]
Day 8 - We did a day tour of HangZhou --- this one was the best - incredible place - great walk around the lake - the food was ok [we prefer the spicier Sichuan/Hunan]
Day 9 - We went to ZhouZhuang - water town - this is a must see - we debated between here and Suzhou --- we're not disappointed [we'll do Suzhou this May]
Day 10 - YuYuan Garden and the shopping area surrounding it - great bargains ---- awesome shopping - fantastic food
Day 11 - Shanghai Science & Technology Museum - there's a lot that's been written on this topic - we thought it was good.
Day 12 - Some more shopping - NextAge Mall/Huai Hal Lu - some packing
Day 13 - Drive back to airport - my brother and his wife were back on their way to the US Sad
