| Post subject: What Chinese Bank do you use? |
I just had another frustrating experience at a local ICBC branch.
-service slow (actually there was no service at all)
-bank employees unfriendly
-long waiting lines (waited for 45 minutes)
-people cutting lines
--> all for a 5min transaction
I would like to change my bank, but i have no idea if any of the other chinese banks is better than what i have experienced so far.
Just wanted to know what you think about Chinese banks, and which Chinese bank Expats should use on a daily basis! |

I do all my banking with HSBC in Hong Kong. Only my wife has an account with BOC here in Shanghai, to which I transfer money once a month for the daily needs. And that would not be needed, if the ATM's here would work reliable, and would have a bit more realistic daily withdrawal limits.
The service level at the Chinese banks here is a bad joke. |

I know what you are talking about andreas! I only use Chinese Bank for daily expenses in Shanghai, since it is more convenient than using my international ATM card.
Does BOC work any better than what i described before at ICBC??? |

i have yet to find a chinese bank that doesn't have a long wait. been using bank of china for five years and don't have any real complaints. for everyday transactions and such they seem to be fine. most of the tellers are semi-friendly (or at least not rude) and many of the branches have started systems that allow you to sit while in line. have done wire transfers, used the atm, used the debit card, etc without difficult most of the time. haven't ever seen any massive line cutting and there are a few quiet branches tucked away that don't have long lines, plus a few branches are open on weekends.
if you will need to do any banking before the upcoming may holiday, go now! the queues before a holiday are atrocious. |

Well, the transfer of money into the account is fast, usually same day. The service at the branch depends a lot on the people there. I live in Pudong, so we deal with the branch on Zhangyang Lu, and there the service is above average I must say. My experiences with ICBC here are not so good, whereas in Guangzhou where I lived before, they were very good.
In general the banking system here is complicated, and not very userfriendly |

I just opened an account with Bank of Communications, the queue is shorter, the teller friendlier than ICBC and more effiecient..... Plus I can put money into my SH Public Transportation card at the machine so I don't have to alwasy have change for taxi. |

Since you have account in construction bank already, try to build a little bit credit, and there's a service of VIP which you don't need to queue anymore. It works for me, so check out the requirement to be a VIP account. |

I use Pudong Development Bank. You could try that one Magnolia, they are also in Plaza 66, 4th floor. No problems until now, they do not speak English, but are very helpful. |
