Post subject: Custom Tailor Wanted Shanghai or Hong Kong?

Looking for a custom tailor to create a custom suit. Which ones are good in Shanghai or should I go to Hong Kong where it is more famous for great custom suits? Also what Suit Material do you think is best (quility/feel/look wise, for business, wedding,....). I heard many times that the major cost difference in any particular custom made suit most places is the material/fabric used to make the suit.

Also what tailor would you recommend and how much did it cost for you to get your suit made? Any other advise would be welcome also.

thanks,

John

I've tried Libre Dauphin on Mau Ming Lu and the "fake" Dave's in Portman. I also checked out a friend's suit from Dong Jia Du. So far I am not impressed. If you really care about your suits, don't do it in Shanghai.

As for material, wool is the most sensible option. There are different grades of wool, Super 100, 120 etc representing threadcount (I think, my memory is hazy). Generally, the lower the number, the coarser but the more hard wearing the wool. Finer wools tend to be more expensive and more fragile. Super 100 is usually a good middle option.

How much did you want to spend? Frankly after my experiences with Shanghainese tailors, unless you're very weirdly shaped, I would just go with a good off the rack. p.s. "good" does not mean brand name.

I have heard good things about much better things Hong Kong. Given the chance, I'd like to try. However, getting a made-to-measure or a bespoke suit made requires a few fittings and I'm never there long enough.

As for the "look" and by which I assume you mean color and style ... well that's a whole 'nother post.

Thanks for your feedback. I think the hard thing in getting a custom suit made is finding the right tailor since even in Hong Kong there might be only a few very good tailors with hundreds of others of wanabees living off the name of the city. Unless your in the clothing industry it is pretty hard decision since it is a bit of money involved and little "brand" name for the general buying public.

I, too, have been trying to look for a good tailor but to no avail. Tried making shirts at 2-3 stores in dongjiadu, and they all turned out really badly. If you ever go there, be sure to avoid #205; they were the worst among the lot, in terms of cratfsmanship and attitude.

I've actually heard pretty good things about the tailor that used to be at Portman, though I haven't seen the stuff that he has made. I was told that he recently moved to a new location.. not sure where he is now. Maybe someone here might now.

The "famous" Dave's Tailor is in Xu Hui:

Tel: 86-21-5404 0001
Fax: 86-21-5404 5880
Add: No. 6, Lane 288, Wuyuan Road, Xuhui District
Email: service@tailordave.com

As I found on their website: http://tailordave.com/location.htm

Before I said something about Sam's Tailor here. The situation is not as clear as I thought, so I deleted the statements.

Do any of these tailors make ladies clothes? I can't find any shops that have clothes to fit a western lady, thinking I might try out some custom made clothes now.

Post subject: HK Tailor

Phiota

In HK I use Houston Tailors. Two very nice Chinese gentlemen run the shop. They are on Mody Road just up from the Shangri La Hotel. Same side of the road. It is a small shop in a small arcade. Don't be confused with much larger Houston building on the other side of the road which alos has a tailoring shop. In fact the tail;ors I am recommending are diagonally opposite The Royal Garden Hotel.

There is also another one in HK you might consider. I have forgotten the name but they are downstairs at The Kowloon Hotel, this hotel is oposite the side entrance to The Peninsula Hotel.
