I put more weight here
we like to cook for our friends, so every weekend we have friends at home, for dinner or lunch, or both!
even when we aren't eating, we are drinking (we like to try different beers, I like strong ones, and anything is light, of course).
I also bake a lot. in Brazil I used to by a piece of cake once in a while, here I bake a cake every week...
but I'm walking everyday now, lost 3 kg that aren't coming back and will re-start my diet slowly. |

We usually gain weight everytime we move to a new culture - too much interesting food!!! Committed to not doing that in Shanghai, though. I really don't keep food in the house except what we need today! No chips, no crackers. Swear off the junk and the processed foods. Processed anything is not good for you - it doesn't fill you up and you get hungry sooner. Buy fruit. Over time your taste shift to preferring whole grains, unsweetened drinks, etc. Gotta have that red wine though.......... |

On the far side of fifty and still thin as a bean as I finish my first year here. I wanted to join one of the fencing clubs in Puxi, but they're too far away from my place in Pudong to get to on a regular basis, so I've taken up hitting a heavy bag. I eat mostly Chinese food, avoid junk, rarely drink, and walk as much as I can. |

Most of the people I know GAIN weight here. We tried keeping an active life back in the country, but the lifestyle here is all about indoors. And the gyms... pfft, try reading Stupid people at the gym. |

Well. The whole question is wrong to begin with. It's not about weight gain/loss, it's about FAT gain/loss.
This being said, due to supply side factors, it is getting easier and easier to eat healthy in Shanghai plus there are more and more gyms available i.e. regardless of how greasy the food is there are basically no excuses for gaining fat here.
"Oh there are so many McD's and KFCs here"
Good one. So advertising DOES work then eh (at least to gullible "people").
Reminds me of this Simpsons episode where Homer blames his complete inability to lose fat on the TV.
"Maaaarge....pleaaaasee....it's the TV...all these beer commercials don't let me stop drinking...." |

Perhaps depends on your lifestyle, I never walked anywhere in the USA, now I walk 1 to 4 hours a day, I have lost 10 pounds since coming here. There are so many options for food here, I'm sure you can find 90% of that which you want. It may also depend on if stress makes you eat more or less |
I definitely gain weight when I go to my home country, a lot of weight. I come here and it comes off (unless I drink beer every day). I also walk miles every day. I don't have a car here just my feet and a bike. Also, when it's summer I don't eat much. The heat just make me feel sluggish. |

I've seen some news clips about weight loss method done in China that people from other parts of the globe are trying. I am not sure about the method, how it works, how much it costs, its effectiveness and safety, etc. But I read something from Reuters that says the one done in TianJin is safe.
I dunno if they have such things in Shanghai. |

I have gained 10 pounds in half a year here. I lived in HK before and walked everywhere up stairs and hills. Here I live out in a compound and have to drive everywhere. Plus in HK, I cooked many of my favorite foods, but now my ayi cooks (she loves cooking with a passion) and it is very greasy.
This weight gain is really depressing me. I go to the gym 5 days a week and am still gaining. |

I"ve also gained a lot of weight here. A major reason is that taxis are cheap so I hardly walk anymore. I used to walk a great deal, but I really have trouble doing so in the summer heat. Now that Fall is on the way I"m resolving to start walking more again. |

Can you please give me some info re this tea and pill? Are they simply for weight loss, or can they help in reducing [bad] cholesterol (LDL)? I'm almost out of my prescribed meds and I still haven't found where I can get them from here; although, I've asked someone from back home to send me some more. But I'll be very interested in the tea and pill you're taking.
Thank you! |

I've lost of fair bit of weight in the two months I've been here. I walk and exercise a lot more than i did at home (i decided to live the the metro to walk then train to work- at home I just got in the car).
I find chinese food generally very healthy. Some food can be greasy but i usually get a few simple dishes and it doesn't seem to be an issue for me at al.
I'd agree with what everyone else seems to be saying- it depends on how you change your lifestyle when you get here as food is cheap, and alcohol is always within arms reach so it depends on what you do. |

It is a combination of lifestyle and genetic background. I have not gained any weight since living in China (about 2 years). I don't believe that Chinese food can be blamed for weight increase. Of course, if you are among those people who cannot resist the allure of KFC and company, you know what the repercussions will be...fortunately I have always disliked fast food. But I wonder, with the wide variety of Chinese food, how can people go to fast food restaurants? |

Too many cocktails, too much heat was a bad recipe for me. I gained weight right when I got out here playing at night. And I could take the heat to do my usual runs outside.. it takes some time to get back on track.
what are these slimming centers i saw in the post? |

^^ the slimming centres... I've just read about those in some online newspaper. Reuters is one. I've also seen them back home from some news on TV.
IDK about the other poster's stuff. |

I seem to have gained an alarming gut in the past 12 months, normally wouldn't have worried about it but now it shows, big time. Strangely, my weight hasn't changed, it stays at about 80 kg, OK for my height of 177 cm.
I blame the fact that my wife gave my pushbike away to an office associate : I ride the e-bike to all my work assignments and will take a taxi for 1,500 metres to avoid the sidewalk mayhem, rain and heat. *Ridiculous* but hey - a taxi fare of 10 kuai is 1/8 of the taxi "flag fall" cost in Australia.
"Flag fall" ($4.80 ~ 30 RMB) in Australia is what you pay when you open the taxi door and settle in, then it's immediately about 6 kuai per kilometre, incremented every 100 metres, or every 30 seconds while waiting at a red light.
Yes, I know calories in vs calories expended : If the 'in' exceeds the 'out' then I get fat, and that's very easy at 46.
I don't like it much - chicks don't dig the Laowai gutlet, preferring Mister flat abs.
It's all my fault ! |

Oops : a taxi fare of 10 kuai is 1/8 of the taxi "flag fall"... make that about 30%. My bad. |
