Perhaps depends on your lifestyle, I never walked anywhere in the USA, now I walk 1 to 4 hours a day, I have lost 10 pounds since coming here. There are so many options for food here, I'm sure you can find 90% of that which you want. It may also depend on if stress makes you eat more or less Smile

I found i put weight on in Shanghai while in other areas of China i maintained the same weight or lost some.

In Shanghai there are too many options for an unhealthy lifestyle and unlike CoffeeHawk, some of us get dragged into that. Late night drinking and eating, taxis everywhere, joining a gym but then not going.

As for the amount of fat in chinese food, i find it to be the same as most countries in that if you choose your food and eat sensibly then its definitely not a problem.

I put on weight moving to China... lifestyle like GC mentioned. Although, whenever I leave China, the weight comes right off. My weight also fluctuates more in China than it does at home.

I gained weight I think mainly because I always stay at home to avoid the air pollution in the street.

i gained weight here for mainly two reasons:

1) food is greasy (if you like local chinese food)
2) taxis are very cheap/so walking is often not an option

Fabiana, it seems everyone is different on this. I myself lost a little weight because A) I was walking and riding my bike every day and B) I don't have a cupboardful of convernient snack foods any more. I also eat much smaller portions in restaurants. IN GENERAL, I would have to say that most people I know seem to gain a bit because they are drinking more than in their home country. Beer and cocktails will put it on faster than anything else....fun fat. Shocked

A comment on the 'staying at home to avoid the airpollution". Unless you have very expensive air cleaning systems in your appartment , the air inside your appartment is not special. You cant see the air pollution inside but it is still there.

I only drop the weight when it is really hot because, I cant face a lot of food in the heat.

The booze definately puts the weight on quicker than anything but, what to do apart from sitting at home watching TV, shopping and dinning out! I was thinking to buy a bike but, dont feel safe on the roads here. I think this is a problem for people away from home and living in a hotel or apartment.

Shanghai is a great place to be but, it is not the real world.

Then what is the real world according to you lazyyorkie?

I have not gained or lost any weight here in Shanghai. Have maintained the same lifestyle as before, normal eating pattern, exercising, etc.

It depends on how your lifestyle changes. I'm about the same even though I eat and booze a lot. I think the food here is less bad (than American food) overall. It helps if you try to walk and take the stairs as much as possible.

Best way to loose weight is to cook yourself or go to good restaurants as they usually don't use the cheap oil for cooking!

And remember to EXERCISE!

My first 6 months I gained weight as there are MC Donalds and KFC's everywhere. Also going out and drinking a lot is not very helpfull if you don't want to gain weight. Right now I think I lost already more then 6 KG as I'm so jealous at all the skinny chinese girls..I really think it's not because of the food because look at all the chinese girls..If you eat and life healthy you won't gain any weight.

I gained weight. Reasons are:

- I used to do a lot of outdoor exercise, particularly cycling, which is difficult to keep up here
- change of diet to more meat (was a veggie before), though compensated a little by less cheese
- a shift of recreational stimulants from non-fattening options to alcohol

I always lose weight here - it's great. Smaller portions, way more walking. I'm not much of a drinker though. I think that's how most people end up packing it on here.

I am down 14 pounds in 4 months. Of course this was a major lifestyle change for me. Not having a cupboard full of chips, eating less fast food, and not drinking as much.

Add that to walking more and getting some time on the treadmill and I weigh about what I did 20 years ago.
