Best Burger - probably malones, certainly can't be AFP since the two times I tried I almost broke my teeth on the bits of bones in it!
Best Pizza - Casanova/velvet lounge (the same pizza)
Best Italian Food - the gondola (good homestyle food at a reasonable price)
Best Other International Food - T8
Best Healthy Eating - zentral
Best Salad Place -
Best Coffee Bar - commune
Best Bakery -
Best Local Shanghainese Restaurant - bao luo
Best Dim Sum Restaurant (Best xiao long bao) - xiao long bao - henan lu way past cheng hua miao small hole in the wall massive queues sitting on little stools in the street!!
Best Hot Pot - yi qun lou (xiu jia hiu)
Best Jiaozi place - dong bei restuarant at fuxing lu near maoming lu
Best Baozi place - opposite yy's on nanchang lu
Best Sunday Brunch - radisson xing guo bing guan
Best Food Bang for the Buck ( Best Food for Cheapest) - zentral (if not a RMB150 teppanyaki dong ping lu)
Best Late Night Food place - bi feng tang, chang le lu
Best Overall Western Food - is there one
Best Overall Asian Food - there are no overall asian restaurants worth a mention are there? maybe should split to thai, indian, south asian, etc.? thai - thai gallery, indian - vedas, south east asian - ma dang lu, a new small place forgot the name - malaysian/indo singaporean food really authentic and inexpensive.

They make a mean, juicy burger at Citizen Cafe. Check it out! For a simple steak and fries dinner, I like going to Des Lys on Xinle lu. Check out the fries even if your meal doesn't come with it Smile

Da Marco is not a good Italian restaurant. Try the more modest Thats Amore and Pasta Fresca Di Salvatore for real Italian.

City Supermarket as best supermarket??? Ok now I get it. You are an American housewife staying at the Shanghai Center apartment... Ah ah. And then you rank Carrefour as the best for imported food... While City Supermarket only had imported food but already ranks the best. Inconsistency.

Has anyone tried Bakara for Indian food? I met a couple of people from India and they said the food at Bakara is authentic and good...I guess its a chain in the states..

It is not Bakara, Its BUKHARA.. Bakara means goat in Hindi ( indian language) Very Happy

Bukhara I think is name of a province...Its not a chain in the states.. But yes, food is good, but on the expensive side.

There's actually a Papa John's in Shanghai? I grew up on that stuff. Where is it exactly and does it taste the same as in the U.S.?

Goodness, someone doesn't get out much. Smile

They've been here is 2003 and last I heard there were at least 15 outlets - I can see one from my bedroom windown and my driver tells me there is one on his block too. Look in any English publication for locations. I don't eat the stuff but my husband says the pepperoni/sausage/mushroom is pretty close to home but not nearly as good as Pasta Fresca.
