Best Burger -- Moon River (for non-beef burgers)
Best Pizza -- why is all the pizza here so mediocre? but Velvet Lounge does a good job
Best Other International Food -- So many good ones, Simply Thai, Nepali Kitchen, Indian Kitchen, ...
Best Healthy Eating -- Element Fresh though I wish there was a better one
Best Salad Place -- California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) at SH Center or Element Fresh
Best Local Shanghainese Restaurant -- Xin Jishi (New Jesse) or Ruijin Restaurant at Ruijin Hotel is also an affordable, picturesque option
Best Dim Sum Restaurant (Best xiao long bao) -- Din Tai Fung or Crystal Jade (tho. they're both better in their home town, Taipei & Hong Kong, respectively)
Best Hot Pot -- Dolar Shop
Best Food Bang for the Buck ( Best Food for Cheapest) -- the little Dong Bei restaurant in my complex that delivers late for free Often have a hard time reaching the minimum order for free delivery (RMB10) its so cheap. & Da Niang Shui Jiao
Best Late Night Food place -- Velvet Lounge is good, tho when you add in drinks, a bit pricey
Best Overall Western Food -- CPK in SH Center (how can you beat an American original?) .... Moon River Diner .... wish there was a Mexican place I could rave about .... & is T8 considered Western? if so, as Conde Nasts World's Top 50, I think that has to win any competition
Best Overall Asian Food -- Chinese, Thai, Indian, etc? How can I choose?
Best Supermarket -- there's a store in Hong Kong called City Super (not City Shop) that's extremely complete and well-done with a deli (tho prices to match), if they had that here, it would be hands down the best, but in its absence, Giuguang (Jing'an area) or City Shop
Best Import Food Market -- see above
Best Food to Bring From Home (from your country to China) -- protein bars, turkey jerky, Rosarita refried beans (since all the grocery stores stopped carrying them)
Best other Chinese -- Di Shui Dong, Bellagio Cafe |

Well, I guess that depends on how you're going to define barbeque. Where I'm from, barbeque isn't cooked on a stick. That'd be considered a "grilled" food, right along with hotdogs, hamburgers....
And those places are great, I agree.....as long as you find one that's not cooking cat meat. |

Best Healthy Eating - Wagas. I'm afraid not. Best healthy eating would be at home.
Best Salad Place - Elements Fresh. What a **** hole. Cocktails ok though.
Best Local Shanghainese Restaurant - I don't like Shanghainese food. Me neither.
Best Dim Sum Restaurant (Best xiao long bao) - Din Tai Feng. This is NOT dim sum.
Best Sunday Brunch - City Diner. Sick
Best Food Bang for the Buck ( Best Food for Cheapest) - City Diner. Wrong. Try some ma la tang stand.
Best Supermarket - Freshmart (Jingan) not Carrefour that's a big headache! Agreed, but overpriced.
Best Import Food Market - City Supermarket. No comment.
Best Food to Bring From Home (from your country to China) - Cheetos. Sure.
Add new categories:
Best Japanese:Haiku is the best hands down (next to O'Malleys). For nonauthentic, sure. Try Tian Jia.
Best Thai: Simply Thai. hahahaha, please refer to Thai/Indian thread. Thai House!
Best Malaysian/Sing: Kampung Kitchen. N/A
Best Vietnamese: Quan Vietnam (the closest authentic pho in Shanghai). Wrong again. Viet resto in Hongqiao has much better, though still mediocre pho. |

Let it be known, though, that the pho in Quan Vietnam is FULL of MSG. Right after having it, i was dizzy, and my spine went numb (like from a tarantula bite) for about 20 minutes. I'm sensitive, though. It doesn't affect other people, so may not be a concern.

These nomination were for the 2006 Best of. Great that people are adding more as the landscape is changing.
Thanks Toffler for the page of links to all these recommendations - much needed. Would be nice to add a link back to this thread also.
This thread were the nominations, and we actually had a vote ( which is why all those other threads are locked. You can see the results here.. http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=art icle&sid=1103748
The winners actually did get a walk plaque from us for the win.
We'll be doing this again for 2007 soon. Things will change. |

Has anyone tried Bakara for Indian food? I met a couple of people from India and they said the food at Bakara is authentic and good...I guess its a chain in the states..
|
It is not Bakara, Its BUKHARA.. Bakara means goat in Hindi ( indian language) Bukhara I think is name of a province...Its not a chain in the states.. But yes, food is good, but on the expensive side. |
Bukhara's the best Indian food I had so far in Shanghai (but I admit I haven't tested every restaurant yet |
