Agree with you.
Need to beware the pickpockets. Ask a local friend and he/she will be able to tell you how to recognize thieves faces - we know from their faces it is true. Being snatched is very rare here in sh, "carrying shoulder bag in front" thing is also to avoid being stolen.
Park your bicycle or motocycle (if you have one) on parking places. pay 0.50-1.00RMB and keep the ticket till you are back.
BTW, the weather forecast no. now goes to 12121 |

SC3 wrote Another scam is for a bar or restaurant to take your RMB100 note, then bring one back telling you it's fake. In actual fact the one you gave them was fine but they will have swopped it on you. I have heard of this happening in Guangzhou. A pain to deal with this one as the only way to deal with it is to remember distinguishing features of every note you hand over (e.g. small rips) or write down the serial number each time.
A friend asked to borrow my pen last night, he was marking all his 100rmb notes. |

Its been mentioned in other posts. Never use the drivers who approach you at Shanghai or Beijing airport beofre you get the the proper queue. They will rip you off.
Always ask for a receipt. If you think you are being ripped off and the driver knows he is ripping you off they will back down. If you are traveling to a hotel make sure that you call over the bell boys/girls and check with them what the price should be.
If you use a travel card to pay for taxis mark it in some way. I have been ripped twice like that, they palm the good card for an empty one. |

The taxis waiting at Longyang Lu subway station for people getting off the maglev are reportedly bad for rip-offs. |

Good point.. but they do work it here. Especially around subway. I know of one expat who made himself a little famous for a short time, watching for pickpockets on fuzhou and then collaring them and taking them to a cop. Rumor has it he snagged something like 8 pickpockets in 2 hours.. mostly as they were trying to unzip someones backpack. |

My phone was stolen today in the underpass in front of Ba Bai Ban near Dong Chang. Be careful always! |

If you start bargaining/negotiating with a street market merchant and you name a price, you have to be prepared to buy it. If you start naming prices and then walk away, they will follow you and might become very angry. It's not a smart idea to ask how much something is just because you are curious since they will tend to bother you and try to get you to buy the item.
No wallets in back pockets, either! |

hey lazyyorkie,
with your posts, it seems like you have some irks against the Phil... huh...
hehe, just kidding... i'm Fil-Chi and i know exactyly how you feel about safety back home (have lived there all my life, only got here this year). but seriously, people do have to be a little bit more careful there than some other parts of asia. careful as in using "a lot" of common sense (which unfortunately, isn't very common nowadays...)
although you've mentioned quite a few truthful scams in the PI, i personally haven't heard of the "girl inviting you to a movie and drugging you thing" - i'm sure it would have wounded up in the news unless this guy was too ashamed of his "simpleness" to report it to the authorities....
i mean seriously.... just have a mindset that any stranger approaching you with surprising & out-of-the-way hospitality want something from you.... hell, even people you trust want something from you.... your wife, bro, kids, friends....
so always have a slight degree of paranoia and forget the church teaching that men are "inherently good inside" coz there'll always be a certain degree of temptation that men cannot resist.... don't let this be YOU.
it's a mindset thing.... don't think like a sheep, think like a wolf....
lastly, i've generally found Shang to be 10 times more safe than Phil.... because lazyyorkie is right, most peeps in PI are armed (whether knives or guns), so in PI avoid all strangers and dark places always. and taxis here are really generally better....
oh and btw lazyyorkie, carknapping & kidnapping aren't the "in things", they're a living.... if your Caucasian, they'll rob you; if your Chinese, they'll kidnap you; if your Filipino, they'll snatch your mobile phone.
and if they do try to steal your mobile phone in the PI, GIVE IT.... seriously, they will stab/shoot you on the spot if you don't, not worth your life, imho....
sori for the long post.... just representin' guys.... |

Hi Jester:
Im glad you came here and set the records straight!
One guy posted and said he felt totally safe in the PI, ignorance is bless right. Quite a few people go over from Shanghai so, it is not a bad idea to give some kind of warning.
Have a good one! |

We can say confidently SH is the safest city in China, if you ever visit Guangzhou~~~
My GZ colle had been robbed twice on the daytime, on a main street.
You pay a little bit attention for your own belongings, then you can keep them in SH. |

I noticed that most barbers/hairdressers dont change the razor blade for each customer. Not good in containing the spread of HIV/AIDS |

Shanghai Railway station is notorious for pickpockets, I had a mobile stolen there once and have heard similar stories. Nanjing Rd/People's Square also has quite a few of them, apparently.
If you feel you're being ripped off by a taxi driver (and don't know how to tell him in Chinese) start writing down his taxi number (usually just above the dashboard) and make it obvious you're doing so, it always does the trick. |

"...if your Caucasian, they'll rob you; if your Chinese, they'll kidnap you; if your Filipino, they'll snatch your mobile phone"
Jester - what about if you're a Westerner but non-Caucasian (e.g. English of East African descent, or American of middle-eastern/pakistani descent, or lets just say an olive skinned, dark haired person from some mediterranean country (southern Italy, Greece, etc.)? In your opinion, would these people recognize you're Western and still 'rob' you, or do you fall in some other category in terms of how sorely you stand out? |
