I like the idea of throwing things around. And what would these scary guys do if the people really had no way to pay? Just a little cash and no credit cards on them?

You can buy video cameras commercially here that are smaller than a cubic centimetre, on the end of a lead. You'd need it connected to a battery-powered video box which is small enough to conceal on the person. Some people here certainly have access to such devices, presumably smaller, you know who you are. Here are my suggestions.

1. Persons #1 and #2 get themselves invited to a scam cafe. #1 is the recorder, with the camera taped to the inside of a wrist, concealed by a loose cuff. Then it can be pointed almost anywhere, using the hand to hide it from direct looks. Pan around when they are not looking, using natural gestures. Get close-ups of the before and after menus. If they refuse to provide the first menu, get the price clearly stated, for which you also need a hidden microphone, old technology.

2. When they charge the exorbitant price, #2 remonstrates while #1 surreptitiously presses a button to send a pre-arranged SMS to person #3, who is waiting outside and calls the police. #1 and #2 have to stall until police arrive, neither paying nor attempting to leave, trying to get the scamsters to incriminate themselves as much as possible. I suggest a double act, with #2 arguing, while #1 avoids attention and quietly records. When the police arrive, #3 sends a pre-arranged SMS to #1. Then #1 and #2 attempt to leave, maybe leaving the originally charged amount on the table. #2 should be in the forefront of anything physical, up to whatever level of violence is felt acceptable, while #1 hangs back and records. With good timing, the police will walk in to catch the scamsters red-handed with threatened or real violence. The counter-scam should not be revealed to the police then, as they would take the video box as evidence.

3. If successful, make several copies of the video and secure in different locations, then upload it on YouTube while contacting local and international journalists. The police will be pissed off at the counter-scamsters, but they would not have committed a crime AFAIK.

If this sounds high-risk, there is a low-risk version, replacing step 2 with

2'. No need to call police or #3: basically as above, making the scamsters incriminate themselves up to some level of threat or violence, then paying up and leaving. Back to step 3.

These bar scams are far less frequent than the airport taxi scams. If you want to help put a stop to something, I'd look at that as a first step. My first trip to China I payed 600 RMB from Beijing airport to my hotel on wang fu jing. I felt pretty stupid, until I found out my boss got ripped for more!

Too bad I am leaving soon,
On my spare time I go to people's park walk around and when they try to talk to me I ignore them without even looking at them, I am sure they are pissed but I loved it, it's next to impossible for these cockroaches to get me to go anywhere with them.

^^ Actually I don't mind the black taxi drivers, sometimes I have gotten to an airport or home with one of them quicker than by the registered taxis, for not much more than the official rate. It is important to negotiate a clear deal beforehand. They will try to scam you, but if you know the prices, they become more or less honest. Actually, for a fixed price, they have no incentive to hit traffic or take an indirect route, so it is usually quicker. One of these guys got me to an airport during the last winter snowfall, while all vehicles around were sliding around and bumping into each other.

Here in the Wild East, many people will try to scam you one way or another, but a sensible attitude generally keeps you safe. The teashop scam deliberately targets innocent foreign visitors. It is clearly supported by local police, and therefore needs to be publicized so that higher authorities might take action.

**** hell its a scam tailored for tourists, not trying to sound too serious or mean but don't we get these everywhere..for example what about the driving licence or no helmet scam in Thailand?

Get pulled on your moped, Mr Plod pulls you over...Licence please...No licence ...Mr Plod fills in a ticket for a fine and points in the direction of the police station ( which ends up being 2km away) walk across the street ...approached by a local ..you ask wheres the station, he then wants to hire you a bike...(even though yours has been detained by the Fuzz) finally get to station and see a long line of foreigners waiting there.

Even though I sympathize with some people, I really don't with people that come from larger cities with there gullible heads on, even if you are on vacation act as you would security wise in your own country, many seem to forget this...

On the other hand if you do find yourself in this position use shock and awe as a last resort and smash **** out of the place, with the knowledge that you are costing these scum at the same time.

If all you're doing is walking around then do others a favor and keep them "engaged."
Keep asking them questions, keep them walking around the park with you.
If it's a cute girl, turn on the charm.

Waste their time.
The longer they're with you the less chance they have to scam someone else.

Not over there much, but when I am I try to purposely get targeted, and then I string them along forever. Keep 'em walking, talking to me, going and going, and then "Oh, sorry ! I forgot I need to meet my friends at Starbucks. Bye !"

Really pisses 'em off Smile

The easiest way to scam you is for someone to approach you offering to sell you a 'g', an 'e' and a 'o' from a second hand keyboard. Looks as though yours are missing.

If you do buy them, ask for a period, comma, and shift key while you're at it.

Which means what? A bigger keyboard in general so sheep can type and hit the correct key with better precision?

Had someone try to pull the "from Nanjing, lost my wallet" scam on Monday night - close to the Pudong Shangri-la. 'Cause right, if I had my wallet stolen in New York City my first inclination would be to ask some Chinese tourist to help me.

Nah, Sheep can't type, because they are "type cast", and sometimes get cast, and are on their backs and can't get up.

Not a bad idea, Hamilton. Not a bad idea at all. In fact, there's a few things that might be fun to do on the next trip home ....
