Hi,

Avoid carrying the passport with you, its so dangerous to do that in *any* country. Just carry a set of colour copies of the essential documents! Smile

The African (Nigerian) Scamsters have taken these things to another level. Its built a pretty nasty reputation for mainly East/West/Central African countries. Always in immigration checks, folks from african countries start getting questioned for quite long periods!

Its been mentioned in other posts. Never use the drivers who approach you at Shanghai or Beijing airport beofre you get the the proper queue. They will rip you off.
Just met some people, they paid from Pudong airport to Lujiazui RMB 630. They have never been in China before and 630RMB was approximately what they would pay home so they just thought "well - taxis here cost same". They noticed that only when they went back and paid RMB 130...

I would say the corrupt police draw the line at that, no? Its one thing to intimidate and rip off a foreigner, its quite another to actually hospitalize them.
If you're corrupt, then there is no line to draw

In addition, be aware of people running along side you trying to snatch things out of your pockets while you are in motion. That is a very popular method used by the out of town gangs (Xin Jiang People). The locals ride so slow they are easy pickins.

This is just a question: Are the "Xin Jiang people" really that bad? Everytime something bad happens, I hear "Xin Jiang people" did it.

I can actually tell a XinJiang person from a Han Chinese person. In my neighborhood I saw them daily in the morning during rush hour casing groups of people waiting for busses or people waiting at stop lights on their bikes. Also, at a nearby XinJiang restaurant I spotted some young men that I recognized picked my purse. I went to the police station and they just nodded, blah blah blah and did nothing as far as I know.

In The US you can now get a Passport ID card, so you don't need to carry your passport on your person all the time....
