have you read any of his other books drummissimo? I liked Angels and Demons and da Vinci Code, but after that his books got boring, they basically follow exactly the same formula - it's like he has a Dan Brown template that he writes from! |

Bought "the kite runner" on the weekend but haven't started yet. Reading "a short history of tractors in unkrainian" at the moment. Quite funny about an old Ukrainian living in the UK who's marrying a young Ukrainian gold digger!
both bought at Charterhouse bookstore. Don't agree on any of Dan Brown's books. THink they are just horrible, but that's just my opinion! |

Oracle Bones by Peter Hessler. Just did a revue on this section of the site.
Rattelsnake: A book about an RN Captain Owen Stanley who commanded a ship of the same name to survey the Great Barier Reef and the Gulf of Carpentaria in Australia. This was the first complete survey of a safe inner passage of the reef. It sounds dry but in fact it is very good as it covers a lot of early Australian history and the exploration of Australia. I realy enjoyed it. |

actually i did not. just finished a&d on my flight back to shanghai. i read some of the covers at the airport bookstore, but the stories did not seem as catchy to me.
by the way: where can i find a large selection of english books in shanghai - similar to US prices, and new!!! (i usually order from amazon.com) |

Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami
A young woman, whom is deeply loved by another man, falls in love with a married woman 17 years her senior. Told through the eyes of the man, it is a love story of unrequited love, longing, and loneliness. Interesting book that starts out grounded in reality but takes on a surreal and dreamlike twist. Good and very quick read. |

aquagirl- this was my first murakami book. definitely want to check out his other stuff- norwegian wood, wind up bird chronicle, dance dance dance. i highly recommend sputnik sweetheart if you get a chance- so strange at times but really interesting. characters have deep passion for music, wine, etc. yet have trouble in their passion for people. also strong theme of doppelgangers and the idea of not being a whole person, of being split into parts. |

cool. sounds like a good read. then i highly recommend norwegian wood. i am not big on love stories (although, this is a weird one), but it was just so well written. really well done. sounds like you would like it too. |

The guy who wrote this is an anthropologist, who spent some time with indigenous ppl of Amazona. He discovers strange way of those ppl to gain the knowledge about nature, medicine and etc by eating tobacco and drinking ayahuasqo... Anyways, all these leads into fascinating study about DNA's mythology cosmic serpents, who are and where do we come from etc questions. Pretty interesting book. |
