Post subject: Would you live in shanghai forever?

Relocation is different from immigration. I believe the majority of reloation cases are due to the horrible job market at home, assignments by home office, and those fortune seekers. For me, it\'d be difficult to cope with the harsh weather and cultural differences (no culture is perfect) on a long term basis after living in California for 20+ years, a couple of years or a few months out of a year is fine...

I agree with Daisy. I have been doing the foreign job assignment thing for two different companies now, and it is really a life changing thing. Consider that all of a persons family and friends whom they know and grew up with are continents away. Not even taken the language and cultural thing into consideration, it does get old after a while. I\'m as much as an adventure as Magellan, but I do miss my home town, my country, family and my friends. Now the opposite side of the equation would be a great learning experience and a second (for some 3rd, 4th and 5th) identity. Smile

Que sara, sara, whatever will be, will be. The future\'s not ours to think. que sara, sara.

I\'m afraid to the word\"forever\". because it lasts too long. don\'t even know what will happen next year :casstet:

it seems that a lot of foreigners want to relocate to shanghai.

I think you need to adjust your definition of \"a lot.\" There are around 5 billion non-Chinese people in the world, and only a few thousand of them want to live in Shanghai. Some are forced to come here, some come for short-term (1-2 year) assignments, and some come with no real plans. It seems to me that a lot of Chinese want to relocate to Shanghai -- there are more waidiren here than foreigners.

it means that the gold house or silver house is not better than my own grass house.

Be happy with what you have, and don\'t ask for anything more? Give up your ambition? Sounds pitiful to me.

Anyway there is ur family and ur friends in ur country, wont you miss them??

If I miss my friends and family in other countries, I can visit them any time I want. Many of my friends have come to Shanghai to visit me. I have a webcam, email, and telephone -- communication is simple. What country is my country? Some of us have already made the transition to a post-national world. I previously lived on land that was controlled by the government of the United States of America, and I currently live on land controlled by the PRC. Those lines on the map are arbitrary boundaries drawn by governments and armies, and they don\'t mean anything to me. Right now, China is my country. This is my home -- it\'s where I live. Maybe I\'ll stay here, or maybe I won\'t, but wherever I go will be my home.

If someone asked me to relocate in USA or some developed countries, I think i wont. I am the one who will miss my hometown very much.

Then don\'t leave your hometown. Don\'t take any risks. Don\'t ever leave your family. Don\'t learn anything. Avoid interesting (dangerous) experiences. Live happily in your grass house.
